96 taurus ax4n tranny

You might need to replace the valve body clip with the upgraded (stronger) one. Ford had problems for a while with the clip breaking and not allowing the tranny to shift into O/D. I had the no O/D problem, I replaced the clip with the upgraded (stronger) one which fixed the problem.

fix with this kit
Sonnax 96206-07K AX4N 4F50N Transmission forward control valve,

Below are the DTC codes if it has any. ISSUE
No 4th gear operation (no 3-4 shift) and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0734 and/or P0761 or 648 may occur on some vehicles.

Od light flashes but if you shut it off and re start it goes off. reverse sometime it goes in other time it hesitatesthen goes in then some times the od light comes on

is the tran fluid burned or smell burned
if so change and change filter
check the pan when you change it and see if there is any metal in it
do you get any slipping 2nd to 3rd
if so you have to have a rebuild
make sure they put the upgrades into it also
like new boost valve and sleeve kit to boost pressure
if you have a 4.0 you have a 4r55e tran
if you have the smaller engine you have the 4r44e tran
good luck check fluid first and filter
give me some feed back if this helps
have a good one

My 2000 taurus transmission(axod) went out. i found a transmision from a junk yard thats a ax4n. is there any way to make it work?

Absolutely not
Rebuild your AXOD

Never install a used unit. Someone elses worn out piece.
If you changed your fluid every couple years, you wouldn't have this problem.

Will a transmission #ax4s from 1988 ford windstar fit a 200 windstar with transmission # ax4s

I dont think that will work ....1988 was aod and aode trans

The AXOD-E was renamed AX4S in 1993. In addition to the name change, improvements in the lubrication of the gearset and capacity upgrades were made. A centrifugal piston assembly was implemented in the intermediate clutch position to improve 1st-2nd and 2nd-1st shift quality and an increase in the clutch's durability was made on some models. High energy friction materials were also introduced. A new twin piston torque converter clutch (TCC) was introduced with the AX4S and the AX4N on some models. The transaxle pan on this model will sometimes read "AXOD Metric" since it's based on the AXOD transaxle. The data plate code for this transmission is "L."
The Ford AX4S automatic transmission is a four-speed electronic overdrive transmission used in 1995 to 2000 Ford Windstar minivan. The transmission is also used in 1991 to 2003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable, and 1993 to 1995 Ford Taurus SHO models. The AX4S is a second-generation version of the AXOD and AXOD-E transmissions used in 1986 to 1991 Ford Taurus.

I have a 2005 Ford Taurus that has 121,000 miles on it, and is making a roaring sound from underneath. Tire Mechanic says it sounds like it is coming from the transmission. I have never replaced the tranny...

It sounds like a hub bearing, turn sharply (but in a safe area) and listen for a change in loudness of the noise. The opposite side of the turn will be the bad bearing (louder turning left indicates right hub bearing, turning right indicates left hub bearing). Please get that fluid changed ;-)

Transmision ax4n not working

Possible bad valve body in transmission or a clogged transimission filter. The only way to check either is to pull the transmission pan.
