First remove battery leads, remove earth terminal first.Clean leads/terminals and refit
Fit positive first for safety
Check tightness of terminals first, loose terminal will cause smoking

It sounds like the starter is jammed and overloading the battery, causing the solenoid to drop out when the voltage falls too low due to the dead short on the battery. Remove the starter and check that the bendix in not jammed on a worn ring gear.

Car making clicking noise when turned over

I need more info. But if you turn the key to start and you are getting a clicking sound and smoke from the starter area then might be a loose connection at the starter or battery. It could also be a short in the starter. send more info for a better responce

Electrical burnt smell

If you had a short in the starter motor windings and held the key, you'd get a click and a burning smell. That would be the insulation burning off the electrical windings. There's a 40-amp max fuse in this circuit.

Starter

A rapid clicking noise when you turn the key would be the starter solenoid trying to engage. The most common cause of this problem is a weak battery. Make sure your battery is fully charged, then try to start it. If this works get your charging system checked out first. Get a "load test" done on the battery. It may be starting to go. Also the alternator should be putting out 14.2-14.5V when the engine is running. If it's lower, the alternator is starting to wear out and needs to be overhauled. Make sure your battery cables are tight and the terminals are free of corrosion (green gunk).

If you need to go further, you only have to follow the positive (red) cable from the battery. It will go directly to the starter solenoid, which is on top of the starter. Hope this helps.

When i try starting the car it does a clicking sound and i keep trying till it strartes ,, would that sound like the starter going or not ?

hi the clicking sound is probably the solenoid switch on your starter motor not fully actuating
this can be because it is worn or because there isnt enough battery power to open the switch
check the condition of your battery and all conections to it and the starter motor clean off any corrosion with abrasive paper to ensure a good connection if the battery is in good condition
and the connections are good you need to get a new starter motor or find someone who can recondition your old one

I have a 2001 maximum and it just stop working last night. The battery works good but the car just makes a clickin sound. I mean it wont turn over or anything

NORMALLY THAT CLICKING NOISE MEANS THAT YOUR BATTERY DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH JUICE TO ENGAGE THE STARTER,THE CLICKING IS YOUR STARTER SOLENOID TRYING TO MAKE A CONNECTION SO POWER CAN GET TO THE STARTER MOTOR,IT COULD ALSO BE A BAD SOLENOID AND OR STARTER.
IF IT TURNS OUT TO BE THE BATTERY YOU MAY HAVE A SHORT SOMEWHERE DRAINING THE BATTERY WHILE IT SITS OR YOUR ALTERNATOR IS BAD AND NOT KEEPING IT CHARGED SUFFICIENTLY.

My 93 Plymouth voyager wont start or make a clicking noise when I urn the key

The clicking you hear it the starter engaging the flywheel but not rotating it - the starter motor has failed. It must be replaced.

Car makes clicking noise and wont start. battery was replaced was no results

the starter solenoid will click only when a fault. Check all starter connections first with the negative pattery cable disconnected in fear of shorting out when doing this proceedure. reattach the negative cable when doe and try to start it again. If it just clicks the starter solenoid is shot.

My car wont start battery is not dead, but wont turn over?

if the battery is fine check if you hear a clicking noise coming from the starter motor when you turn the key to try and start the engine.
If you hear this noise then this is a good indication that the selenoid has failed meaning you need to replace the starter motor.

You can give the starter motor a hit with a piece of wood as some times this will get the starter motor working just to start the car but this isnt a permanent fix and could leave you stuck if you used the car.

Now if the starter motor isnt clicking but you hear a clicking noise coming from either the cars fuse box or the ecu when you turn the key to start the car then this would indicate a problem with the imobiliser this would need testing using a diagnostic machine as their is no other way of testing this to find out if its at fault.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

Intermittent starting problem with my 1998 Hyundai Accent 1.3i

first off, when it wont start check the voltage from the battery cable where it connects to the starter, if you have 12.5 volts there that will take battery cable corrosion out of the equation, then check to see if you have ground at the starter, which it sounds like you do not. it sounds like your ignition switch but hard to say from discription, make sure your battery cables are all tight, if you have all of this and its good i would say its the ignition switch which you can look up how to test in a chiltons or haynes manual from the auto parts store, if all of that stuff is good you can take the starter off and have it tested for free at autozone or any autoparts store, but usually the starter goes out really quick or just quits all together, if your not hearing a click noise when you turn it then your solinoid isnt engaging and means you dont have ground to it due to a short or bad ignition switch, that about covers the whole starting system, fuse isnt bad since it works sometimes. good luck hope that this helps you send me a message if you need more indepth help =)
