Miss fires are caused by a number of problems. Bad plug wires, dead spark and plugs low compression are a few. I would start by changing the spark plugs and doing a compression test on the motor at the same time. This is a relatively cheap way of checking your problem. If the spark plugs are carboned up, oil soaked or worn out, they will not fire. If the plugs do have oil on them, the valve stem seals are garbage. These seals keep the oil from the valve cover area out of the cylinder and require a head rebuild $$$. If the plugs do not fix the issue move on to the plug wires. Do not buy cheap ones!!! Spend the extra 10-20 dollars and buy Taylor or MSD wires. These have better conductivity and will give you better gas mileage. This should fix any miss fire or at least tell you if your motor is running properly. Any miss fire will knock down your fuel mileage substantially. Hope this helps.

If check engine light is on. take it to an auto parts store and they will read the problem code for free. auto-zone etc, no sense in spending money if you do not have too for the wrong part. have a good day !

I have a 2001 Polo GTI, which is drinking fuel

There are many possilities. Dirty air filter, fouled up spark plugs. Ignition system problems. Timing problem. Also maybe the thermostat is stucked open, causing the car to run below normal operating temperature which also cause it to burn more fuel. Also the fuel pressure regulator maybe defective.
