If its an electric fan they dont run all the time, a relay turns them on when the vehicle reaches a certain temp. once below that temp it shuts off. Hope this helps.

  • Relays carry high-amperage current controlled by a low-current switch
  • When a faulty relay is not replaced, the circuit will either be non-functional or remain engaged. here's your relay you need.

What could be making the radiator fans in my 2000 Alero stop working? We just replaced the old one yesterday and the fans worked great and then they stopped working again tonight. We checked the fuses...

the temperature sensor is next to thermostat housing disconnect the sensor and start the car if the fan works right away you have a faulty sensor also make sure there is good ground to the body and engine

LOOK UNDER THE HOOD IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. ON DRIVER SIDE FOR FUSE BOX.LOOK ON FUSE BOX COVER IT HAS LOCATION FOR FUSES AND RELAYS.MOST TIME PROBLEM WITH COOLING FAN CIRCUIT WILL CAUSE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT.BAD ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR WILL CAUSE COOLANT FANS NOT TO TURN CAUSE OVERHEATING. ON.REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP SEE IF STOP OVER HEATING. IF ALL LOOKS GOOD HOTWIRE COOLANT FANS MAKE SURE FAN MOTORS ARE GOOD AND NO SHORTS AT FAN CONNECTOR WIRES.

The engine consistently gets hot and overflows though the fans are working fine. There are no visible leaks anywhere. Also, the transmission has been lulling at times since this began. I am wondering if...

A blocked radiator will cause the symptoms you are describing. A completely failed water pump would also cause these symptoms, but you generally would have at least a small leak by the water pump and the noise would be distracting from the failing pump. So try to flush the radiator and replace if you are unable to get the liquid to circulate normally.

2001 Oldsmobile Alero overheating

I think you started out looking in the right places. Replacing the coolant, thermostat, relay and sensor are all fairly inexpensive.

I believe you either have blockage in the system (especially if you're using tapwater), or your water pump may be failing.

I would first either take it to a radiator shop and have them flush the cooling system out thoroughly, or else pick up a chemical flush kit and do it yourself. This involves more than just drain and refill.

If this doesn't work, your next step will probably be replacing the water pump. At almost 200k miles, it's probably about due anyway.

Radiator coolant fan

Some car designs only have one radiator fan as opposed to 2 fans. Typically the second smaller fan is specifically for the AC when its turned on. But with the larger single fan design, its turns on when the AC is on regardless. Now if the fan doesnt come on at all at any other time... like to prevent the car from overheating, you may want to check the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. Its located on the engine and easy to replace. Can be tricky to find. They only run 20 bucks thankfully.
