Dodge pick up won't go into reverse. Back Up lights turn on and there's a sound of engagement but no reverse action. all other gears function fine. truck starts in park and neutral. could this be a torque converter issue or a shot gear?

Having the same problem but it also will not shift into 2nd gear. We have had nothing but problems from this truck since we bought it. It probably should of been classified as a lemon. I think we have had it a little over a year and it has sat in the driveway more than it has ever been drove.

i have a 01 dodge 1500 that engages gears but it creeps very slow. it happened out of nowhere when i was driving. im thinking its just the tourque converter. i have had more problems with it since buying it from a gentleman at 125000 miles.

Check for a faulty valve body. there is a tech service bulletin for your problem. obtain a chilton's, or haynes repair manual specific to your truck, in the general maint. section you will find how to perform this operation. it is fairly simple. (if i can do it) adjust both bands then start/engage the reverse to see if this solves the problem. the TSB can be found on any internet site that features them. ex. type dodge ram tsb's and you will be on the right track. if this does not solve your problem, you could have a partially clogged trans coolant line as there is a check valve located within the return line that if it becomes clogged, will not allow fluid to enter the converter.

Have your transmission checked. i have seen so many time that all the gears will work but not reverse. it may have melted onto another gear not allowing it to move.

1999 dodge caravan where is the reverse light switch Lights on on in reverse but sometimes stay on when selector moves to drive.

There used to be a switch on automatics called the neutral lock out switch. This served the function of keeping you from trying to start the car while already in gear and also turned on the backup lights. It was connected mechanically to the gear selector. The contacts would wear with age, causing starter and back up light problems . Suppose they have something similar these days. drop by a dealer and ask the parts desk guy. He will know what it is and where it is.

My 2003 dodge caravan would not start after driving about 1/2 hour. I stopped for coffee and when got back in to start it started I switched gears and it stalled. I tried to start again switched gears then it started but only for 2 sec. No clicking, no cranking sound just would not start but battery functions were great. Spent 2 days with a mechanic who could not resolve so sent to Dodge. After a day of putting wires back and checking out the problem they said it was the computer. Said that it was bad and could be replaced at no charge due to malfunction. Yes, it worked fine afterwards no more problems. They also said that some of the computers are found to be defective like this one so I hope this helps you in the right choice to have the dealer check it out if you are unable to get a computer reading and there is no obvious short in the system. Free sounded very good but as you know there is no such thing as really free as they got me for other things $350 worth. ouch!

Sounds like a problem with the gear selector itself. These can wear and cause the problems you describe. Another possibility is that something underneath the car is interfering with the action of the gear selector. I recently had a car with a broken exhaust mount. As a result he exhaust had dropped into a different position and was preventing the free movement of the gear selector underneath the car. All gears could be engaged apart from reverse - so worth investigating.
