Question about 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis

2 Answers

My speedometer is digital. When I turn on the headlights the dash lights go dim and I can hardly see my speed. Even when I have the intensity knob turned all the way.I have had a new light switch installed and it did not fix. Also on a bright sunny day I can not see my speed digets. My mechanic says that the bulb is okay.

  • maxeetay Mar 21, 2011

no , the digets are green

I tried to answer you, but I am not sure that it went through.

The speedometer digets and other digets are green. It isn't the digets that

are dim , it is the backgrounnd light. I can not adjust them.

  • maxeetay Mar 21, 2011

I have digetal speedometer (green). The background light dims when I turn on my headlights until I can hardly read the speed I am going. The intensity know does not make it
brighter but will make it completely dark. I have had a new light switch put on and the mechanic says it is not the bulb. Can you give
    me some information. Thanks

Thank you, I will take this information to my mechanic.

Ok, when you turn on the head lights the dash lights get dim.But if you turn off the dash light does the dash light gets bright again or it remains dim.------ If the dash light becomes bright as you turn off the head lights then its a short in between dash lights wirings and headlight wirings. There is a confirm short.rte check the head light switch wirings and dash light wirings.Any of the wirings is getting in contact with metal part or ground wire is getting loose or its getting connected to any other live wire. ------------- Also check the battery voltage. And battery to alternator wiring and connections.Get the battery and alternator voltage checked separately.---------If the battery or alternator voltage is low then, this low voltage can be the issue. Also check the dimmer switch.Remove and reconnect dimmer switch. ---------- Check out this possibilities. This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

    Cluster Dimming

    Description

Cluster dimming is controlled by the interior lamps dimmer (rheostat) in the headlamp switch through Circuit 19.

    Quick Check

    • If cluster does not follow the dimming of the other interior lamps, check that proper rheostat voltage is present at cluster inputs.
    • If all interior lighting is affected, check continuity of circuit from the headlamp switch to the fuse.

The lights to the dashboard

It may be something even simpler.
Nearly every car has away of dimming the dashboard lights - and on many it's REALLY easily to accidentally bump the wheel or dial that dims them all the way off without even realizing it.
Typically there is either a knob to turn, or a wheel to rum your thumb over - and it is located near the headlight switch. On the Explorer, it should be a wheel that you push up or down with your thumb, directly to the right of the headlight knob.
Try running your thumb against it to push it all the way up. Chances are this will bring your dash lights back to full brightness.

Trying to remove light and washer wiper knobs from 1001 Ford F150.

Headlight knobs are attached to a long stem into rueastat switch (dash light dimmer ) push the small button spring loaded of headlight switch behind dash panel. Knob with stem will come out. Careful not to turn on headlights & run battery dead.
Wiper knob has a release tang behind knob push up tang with a small screw driver ( pocket type flat ) or look for a small set screw on knob
Speedometer cable may be broken, loose from dashboard connection, loose from transmission or broken cable gear in trans. Not sure when ford swicthed to magnetic sensors. Possible lost pick up sensor on drive shaft

Lights or fuse for my speed odemeter guage and heater/air conditioning system

These lights for the dash are controlled by a rheostat instrument control dimmer switch next to the main light switch for the headlights, it is either turned off (have seen this dozens of times) or it is defective. Below is a picture of the switch assembly I speak of. The thumb wheel next to the knob is the dimmer control.

Dim dash lights

Check your owners manual. There must be a way to dim the dash lights. Should be a dial or a knob somewhere.

You need a new headlight switch most likley. Try turning the knob to dim and brighten quickly and push in and out on the headlight between parking and headlights.

Dash and parking lights will not come on, on a 1992 towncar

You must check all of your fuses. It's most likely one of those. Dash lights are also controlled by the intensity knob on either your headlight switch or possible near it. It will dim/brighten your radio lights and interior lights too.
