Question about 1985 Chrysler LeBaron

The power loss light kept coming on in our 1985 lebaron. So replaced the battery, still kept losing power, replaced the alternator, still is losing power. What should I be checking next and is it possible that the alternator is not installed correctly? The original alternator had 3 plugs on it but the new one only has 2. Perhaps the wrong alternator?

The power loss light has nothing to do with the alternator, the power loss light is part of the on-board computer system it is the equivalent of the check engine light on newer cars it is on because one of the sensors is not working on the car.

this is how to retrieve the code that is turning on the light.

turn the key on ( do not crank the engine ) turn the key off, turn the key on, turn the key off, turn the key on. ( never crank the engine ) this all has to be done in les then 10 seconds so to re-cap key on, off,on,off, on.

the power loss light will start flashing. all codes are 2 digit, for example a code will look like this.

flash,flash, pause (about 1 second), flash, flash,flash this code would be a 23 , the first two flashes would be a 2 the pause is the separator the next 3 flashes are a 3 so the code is 23, i hope you under stand.

    Thank you. ugh...I had 4 of different codes I believe as there were longer pauses in between a couple of the numbers. This is what I got 12, 41, 51, and 55. I really appreciate your help.

    the 12 is the start of test, the 55 is the end of test so that just leaves the 41 and 51.....code 41 problem with charging system, code appears if field control fails to switch properly ( i guss i spoke to soon i am not sure what the plug in is that is no hooked up but it sounds like you need it, the voltage regulator is built into the power control module and i think the plug in that is not hooked up is the control cicuit.)....code 51....problem with oxygen feed back system. ( repace O2 sensor )

    thank you very much. This makes a lot of sense as we were wondering what the 3rd plug should go to. Any idea how to rectify this or where to plug the 3rd plug in since there is only 2 on the alternator? Can I get an alternator that has the 3 plugs?

    that's what I figured. Thank you very much for your help. I am just a girl who has learned much from my grandfather who was a diesel mechanic but sadly I lost him almost 10 years ago however I still insist on doing as much work on my car as possible myself before taking it to a garage. Take the truck to a Autozone or O'reilly Auto parts and have the battery and the charging system tested with a special tool, they can advise you what is going on and it is a free service.

What is wrong when the power loss light is on. It has a new alternater on it


use voltmeter to find out if the NEW alternator is good. or bring it to auto parts store that does free alternator & battery check. make sure all battery terminals & grounding connections are shiny cleaned.

If you're losing power it probably has something to do with your battery being discharge, a faulty alternator or a bad belt. Autozone can check your battery and alternator out for you for nothing. The belt you can visually inspect for cracks, shiny patches, breaks, or missing teeth.

Bad battery or alternator have both tested and replace the bad part also check battery cables both power and ground and power cable from alternator(since sometimes its something cheap and easy like that)

Battery light w/ power loss


how can it be that your battery and alternator are good but u still loose power??? then u'll have to check
1) your battery
a) turn your car off then check if your battery keeps regular Voltage should be around 14
b) turn your car on including all LIGHTS and FANS and see if its still 14 if its not 14 and going down then you have a power loss in your battery and your battery doesnt provide enought charge to Alternator

2) Alternator
For your car its OK to use battery with 75A if you put lets say 100A then you'll simply kill your altenators brushes

it sounds like you need a new alternater. to be sure, most autoparts stores will check it for free, but you'll have to take it off yourself.

Power Loss light and subsequent stopping of the car


It may be the alternator going. If u have a battery light comming on and other power sources weakening or cutting out and ur car dies then that usually means alternator. If u can get it to a parts store like checker or advanced they usually do a free alternator and battery test right there under the hood to let u know if one or both are bad. And if it's the alternator i believe those are pretty easy to do.
