Question about 1999 Dodge Ram

Open Question

I brougt a uses 1999 Dodge Ram 5.9L 4X4. Check engine light came on but then went back out and would not shift to 1st gear when pulling out or manuelly and through information gathered on varies forums, things point to governor pressure sensor and soleniod. I replaced those and still no 1st gear. When again trying to manuelly shift to 1 st gear, I noticed that the shift did not actually engage tranmission. I unhooked the linkage and engaged transmission into 1st gear and it was like the truck was in neutral, no jumping nor nothing, engine just revs like neutral. The computer has not been reset. Thanks Jef

SOURCE: 99 dodge ram 4x4 w 360 engine trans has only 1st gear and reverse

Are you saying you put in a new but used tranny and it still dosent go out of first gear? Or are you saying you replaced a tranny line? If its the tranny you replace and first is the only gear you may not have adjusted the shifting linkage correctly. Put the truck in park and loosen the linkage on the tranny and slidr the rod on the tranny back and retigten and try that

Have you replaced the transmission filter and fluid yet,
if your transmission works ok until it heats up,your transmission external cooler may be plugging up getting the transmission fluid to hot and not cooling it at all.It is located in front of your A/C and radiator.you can replace it with an after market one or have it flushed.
and you might want to put in an additive for the transmission made my Lucas.

!996 that's pretty old school, I don't think that has a shift on the fly feature. Maybe once the hubs are locked in.

Just bought a used 1999 dodge ram 1500 4x4, the transmission was fine as-well as the idle when i got it. Got it to th interstate to get home and it wouldnt go above 40mph an running near 4000rpm just to...

No, your truck is not shifting out of second gear when it is warm. If your check engine light is on, scan it for codes. The bands on the transmission need to be adjusted, they can be adjusted from the outside on a dodge. Inspect your transmission fluid, it it's discolored or smells burnt, have it flushed and new filter installed. Use only ATF+4 fluid. I hope this helps.

Transfer case wont engage

shift into 4wd and move truck a couple of feet.
if light is still off, park truck block the wheels set the park brake jack right front wheel and try to hand spin the wheel if wheel doesn't turn 4x4 is functioning properly but there is a wiring problem use an ohmmeter to check the 4x4 switch wiring fuse and bulb
if wheel turns freely the front axle or transfer case is not engaged
attempt to hand spin the front driveshft if the driveshaft will spin the transfer case is not engaged check the transfer case shift linkage, problem is in linkage or transfer case internals
if the driveshaft will not spin the transfer case is engaged properly
with trnsmission in neutral or park start engine measure vacuum on the two vac lines at front axle shift motor . one line should have approx 20" vacuum. other line should have none
if no vacuum measured look for vac leak or bad vac switch
if both lines have vac look for a bad vac swithc or ruptured cad actuator diaphragm
if one line has 20" +- VAC
move transfer case lever to 2wd measure vac again lines should have swapped vac signals
if no vac switch bad or 4wd shift likage needs adjusting
if yes vac motor bad or stuck or shift fork stuck
remove vac shift motor from the axle attach vac lines to shift motor engage disengage 4wd
does shift motor plunger move at least 1/2 inch
no shift motor bad
yes check axle shift fork and vac motor for binging
