P0171 - System too Lean (Bank 1)
P0174 - System too Lean (Bank 2)

They have to do with fueling the engine. Usually when a car is running a less-than-optimal fuel mixture, it's traceable to O2 sensors, mass airflow sensor, or sometimes a coolant temperature sensor. These all have a direct effect on the fuel mixture. If your O2 sensors have been in the car for more than 60k miles, I'd change them first, as they have the biggest impact on fuel mixture. I don't know what year your car is, but if it's 95 or older, there is only one sensor per bank of cylinders. If it's 96 or newer, you'll have four - two before the catalytic converters, and two after them. The ones you'd want to change are the pre-cat O2 sensors, closest to the engine. These are used for determining fuel mixture. The post-cat O2 sensors are there for monitoring the cats' efficiency.

Check for vacuum leaks, especially the intake manifold gaskets. If those are o.k., clean the Mass air flow sensor.

your computer is reporting bank 1 and 2 too lean, usually caused by the mass air flow (MAF) sensor, you can usually clean this sensor and reset the light. Clean it with electric cleaner or brake cleaner, make sure it is dry before reinstalling, also take care not to damage it. Hope this helps, let me know

SOURCE: geting code po171 & po174

These are system lean dtcs the most likly causes are vac leaks or contaminated MAF sensor. If you have access to a scan tool you can check the baro reading, a good reading is 145-155hz, if its down in the 120s the mass air flow is contaminated, ford says to replce but you can take it apart and clean the two wires, carefully with carb cleaner and dry air.

All OBD Codes are on the internet with
print,charts,video,solutions

You Type your codes & read up

Study OBD 2 Systems also

OBD PO171
OBD PO174

I had to Google Cen Tech as i never heard of it

They appear to be inexpensive low end for sure

You won't get a lot of data out it

If your never planning on going to professional software,
consider the top scan/code reader type tools like Innova Professional or at least mid level Actron & a couple other brands

You really need to see sensors, emission monitors, so
your ready for inspection

You will only get Generic Codes from a code reader
not body functions likes abs,air conditioning, srs,& others

More data is better-- you will learn these systems as time goes by

They have been with us for 35 years now

OBD1 15 years
OBD2 20 years

WHAT DO OBD2 CODES PO171 & PO174 REALLY MEAN ? WHICH PARTS SHOULD I CHECK & OR REPLACE?

P0171 and P0174 are identical except for the sensor locations. For both to appear at the same time, a common source is likely. Go to the following URL and read the various descriptions: http://www.obd-codes.com/p0171

You can decide for yourself what the common source(s) is/are. I'd bet on the MAF.
