Question about Ford Econoline Wagon

MY SON HAS AN EX royal mail w reg 55d van. he has great problems starting the vehicle.the battery and glow plugs are new. he has to resort to pushing the *** under the bonnet to get the diesel through. any ideas??

Hello, Your complete message did not come through as 1 word was bleeped out so I do not know what he pushed to get the diesel to flow. What usually happens on Diesel engines is they lose the Diesel fuel in the line due to an air leak. Most of the time the fuel just returns to the tank and fuel has to be drawn all the way back to the engine.

Because of the air leak the fuel can not be pulled up front to the engine. What is usually done is to disconnect the main fuel line at the tank and pressurize the fuel line with air from a compressor with a small amount of force, perhaps 20PSI. Then spray the fuel line working forward from the tank with a soapy water spray from a old detergent sprayer. The leaks in the line will make the soapy water bubble. Then fix the bad spot.

If having a compressor is a problem, there are small "O" rings on the connections under the bonnet. They are cheap, but you need Automotive type "O" rings to withstand the chemicals. There can also be "O" rings in the Injectors. It is also possible to have a clogged Injector which is not closing completely. This can show up in the 20PSI test, or there are machines which can test the Injectors at some Mechanic shops.

I stayed with the fuel idea as a problem based on your letter. But your son should check a part called a "TIMER" for the glowplugs as this part actually makes the new glowplugs your son installed, work. The timer can be tested with a Voltmeter or testlight. Since your son felt the old glowplugs were bad, the problem can easily be due to a bad timer.

I hope my solution is very helpful in solving the problem. You can copy this infomation with a printer in your home and give my advice directly to him.

Starting problem on kangoo

Check the big fuses in the power distribution box under the bonnet ,this is a UK reg vehicle kept outside no doubt and these fuse connections under the bonnet do get damp ,if still no joy for whatever reason then but a manual push button starter switch and wire them in direct manual overide ,power to switch then direct to the glow plugs ,so when the light dont come push button in for 10secs and no more and away you go,Clean the big fuses and spray with some 3in1 or a oil can with engine oil not that wd40 and lubricate the connections where the fuses push into.

Expert van 2lhdi 2005 very poor starting in cold weather had glow plugs and relay fitted still no better. i only do 3000 a year and mainly short jouneys less the 5 miles. new battery last year. it does...

Firstly fit a manual overide to the heater plugs .relay -push button type switch -wire -connectors ,run a wire direct from battery to relay ,other side to heater plug relay output so it feeds all the heaters ,push button inside cab with a 12v feed from ignition switch running to relay then other side of relay to earth ,leave vehicle on charge often on trickle charge where possible ,also on a full tank of diesel put in a litre of petrol to stop diesel waxing up ,nice old rug or blanket over engine and it will first time every time ,only use the petrol when weather below minus 5c though ,great vehicles these peugeots but i do like my ford transit

Citroen C15 Diesel Van (1769cc - S reg) turns over but doesnt start. then battery dies! -Van has started yesterday via jump start then today same problem not starting!! -Glow plugs ok and electrics to glow...

sounds like problem i had, the head needs to come off and needs reshimming, I bought one like this, £100 later , It was sorted, I got a bargain cos the van sales bloke didn't know what the problem was and just wanted rid. 50k later still going strong.
