Question about 1996 BMW 318

Overheating have just bought a 93 318 i, have noticed that when stationary or just idling the engine overheats, and when moving it cools down again. it is not throwing water or coolant about and was hoping you could help on this!! many thanks taff thomas

My 1995 318ti coolant system will not turn off even when motor is off had to disconnect the battery pls help

Check for leaks in the coolant system and check you auxiliary cooloing fan is working when the temp rises. You may have air in your coolant system? Refill again with the bleed valve on your radiator open as you do. With engine running turn your heater on highest setting so as to allow the water into your heater matrix, then turn off car after a minute and refill system again.

I suspect the cooling fans are not kicking in when the coolant reaches the trigger temperature. But you don't mention if the fans are operating.

When the vehicle is moving with enough speed there is usually enough air flow for the radiator to dissipate enough heat without fans but not when the car is stationary which is one condition where the fans are necessary.

Issue with coolant system: Issue began after I had radiator shop in Sonora Ca. flush out system and replace thermostats as normal maint. and they put the t stats in wrong holes. I only noticed after they...


AFTER REPLACING THERMOSTAT DONT STOP OVERHEATING.CHECK THE COOLANT FAN CLUTCH.WITH HOT ENGINE THE CLUTCH FAN SHOULD HAVE RESISTANCE WHEN TURNING IT WITH HAND.IF NOT FREEWHEEL.FAULTY CLUTCH FAN.HAVE TO REPLACE CLUTCH ON FAN.BAD CLUTCH ON COOLING FAN WILL CAUSE ENGINE OVERHEAT.WHEN CLUTCH FAN FREEWHEELS AT HIGH SPEEDS NOT PULLING ENOUGH AIR THROUGH RADIATOR CORES TO COOL DOWN ANTIFREEZE AND ENGINE.

When idling my jeep overheats. The cooling fan is running and it speeds up when temperature goes up. The temperature gets close to 260 degrees and the engine tries to stall. when I start moving it cools...


At idling speed an engine does build up a lot of heat and the cooling fan will kick in. In slow moving traffic or traffic jams the temperature gauge can touch the red - particularly on hot days. The reason it cools down when you start moving is because of the air flow through the radiator.

Presumably there are no leaks from the cooling system otherwise you would have mentioned it. In normal circumstances the fan will not be running as you are driving at speed, as the air-flow through the radiator is sufficient to cool things. The fan only kicks in to get rid of excess heat - and this usually occurs at idling speed or after you have parked the car.

If the fan is running all the time as you drive, this points to either a fault in the fan switch, or the car is running too hot. presumably in normal driving the fan isn't running and the temperature gauge reads normal?

It is common - in stationary traffic many cars overheat (particularly big engined models) try to stall and 'cut out'. Restarting can be difficult until the engine cools down.

Is your car overheating in normal driving conditions or just at idle speed? Overheating in normal driving conditions can be caused by things like a failing water pump, blocked radiator, collapsed hose, faulty thermostat or, in the worst case scenario, cylinder head problems.

Overheating at idling speed is 'common'. Check your coolant level. If your car isn't using/losing coolant then there probably is no major problem. You can flush out the cooling system and refill with new coolant - and also check your radiator. Are the cooling fins crumbling with age? Or maybe they're partly clogged with insects and debris from the road? A blast with a hosepipe wil sort that out ..

The question is how much does your car overheat in normal driving? If it doesn't .. it appears as though you have nothing to worry about as such. Most cars have 2 speed fans... the 2nd faster stage kicks in at some point dependant on engine temperature. Perfectly normal.

If the fan does not come on and the car is stationary then the car will overheat. Whilst the car is on the move enough airflow through the radiator will keep the overheating issue in check. Try putting the interior heater on to full if you see the car getting hot in future - this is little trick that assists the engine cooling and that might just get you to where you want to go in an emergency. Check the fan, the fan relay and fuse and any electrical wiring for continuity

Car is overheating, thermostat was changed and the radiator was flushed, car does not overheat while idoling, but when you start driving it overheats


It sounds like water pump may be your problem. It circulates a 50/50 mixture of glycol (or some form of) and water through the engine block and cylinder head and back through the radiator. In the radiator the mixture is cooled when air passes over the fins of the radiator. This is accomplished by driving or a mechanical/electrical fan when stationary. The water pump also circulates the mixture through the heater core giving the car heat. If the water pump is not circulating the water back to the radiator to cool, it will overheat. More heat is caused by the engine when driving (much less heat when idling), hence the overheating while driving.
