The ignition timing is controlled by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and cannot be manually adjusted. The valve timing is a function of the timing chain and sprockets, again normally this has a fixed value. If the timing chain has stretched out of spec this could cause the timing to be off, typically it would be a minor deviation though.

Timing chain procedures must be followed exactly or damage to valves and pistons will result.

The ratchet assembly will be damaged if compressed. Do not compress the ratchet assembly.

    • Compress the tensioner plunger, using an edge of a vise.
    • Using an appropriate tool such as a small screwdriver or pick, push back and hold the ratchet mechanism.
    • While holding the ratchet mechanism, push the ratchet arm back into the tensioner housing.

    • Install a paper clip into the hole in the tensioner housing to hold the ratchet assembly and plunger in during installation.

If the copper links are not visible, mark one link on one end and one link on the other end, and use as timing marks.

  • Install or connect the following:

  • The LH timing chain guide

    • The bolts.

      1. Torque to: 71-107 inch lbs (8-12 Nm)

    • The RH timing chain guide
    • The RH bolts

    1. Torque to: 71-107 inch lbs (8-12 Nm)

  • The timing chains and the crankshaft sprockets
  • (A) Slide the (1) crankshaft sprocket onto the (2) crankshaft, aligning the copper link on the timing chain with the mark on the crankshaft sprocket
  • (B) Position the timing chain over the camshaft sprocket, aligning the copper link with the mark on the camshaft sprocket

  • NOTE: Ensure that the (1) copper marks on the timing chain are lined up with the corresponding marks on the crankshaft sprockets and the camshaft sprockets.

NOTE: Ensure that the (1) camshaft sprocket keyway is 90° from the (2) valve cover mounting surface.

NOTE: Ensure that the (1) RH crankshaft sprocket is on the front of the (2) LH crankshaft sprocket with the long hubs facing each other.

  • The LH and RH timing chain tensioner arm onto the dowel pins
  • The RH timing chain tensioner
  • The bolts.
  • The LH timing chain tensioner
  • The bolts

  • Remove or disconnect the following:

    • Both the RH and LH retaining pins from the timing chain tensioner
    • The Cam Positioning Tool and the Camshaft Positioning Tool Adapters from the camshaft

  • Install or connect the following:

    • The crankshaft sensor ring onto the crankshaft sprocket
    • The engine front cover
