Question about 1984 Toyota Starlet

1 Answer

I have a Toyota Starlet. When I got it the radio displayed SEC, so I entered the code and it worked. However, sometimes after I start the engine, the radio returns to SEC as if the battery were disconected. It works fine if I just turn the key to ACC or even almost all the way to start the engine (i.e. when the dash lights go out and radio goes off), then back. It doesn't do it everytime the engine starts, but a lot of the time.

Do you have a check engine light on? If you do, go pull the codes and post them. That's always the first place to start. Anything until then is just a guess. Crank sensor, cam sensor, fuel pump, vacuum leak, so many possibilities. Let me know if you get the codes.

My Radio say SEC? I cant start radio

The sec displayed is security code in case radio is stolen it cant be used without entering the code. Owner may have disconnected battery and didnt put a memory saver in lighter outlet so it locked. If you go to dealer they can retrive the code for you then you enter code and radio should work.unless they changed the factory code. If not and code from dealer works keep in car or safe place so you have it. Usually no charge to do retrival at dealer takes 2 minutes. Hope this helps

2000 Chevrolet Lumina Unlock radio code

If you have the security code it's easy. The code is something that either you or a previous owner entered. If you don't have the security code a trip to the dealer will be in your future.

Unlocking the Theft-Deterrent Feature After a Power Loss

Enter the code as follows; pause no more than 15 seconds between steps.

  1. Turn ON the ignition. LOC will appear on the display.
  2. Press MN and 000 will appear on the display.
  3. Press MN again to make the last two digits agree with your code.
  4. Press HR to make the first one or two digits agree with your code.
  5. Press AM-FM after you have confirmed that the code matches the secret code you have written down. The display will show SEC, indicating the radio is now operable and secure.

Entering the incorrect code eight times will cause INOP to appear on the display. Wait an hour with the ignition in the ON position before you try again. When you try again, you will have three more chances (eight tries per chance) to enter the correct code before INOP appears.
Deactivating the Theft-Deterrent Feature

Enter the code as follows; pause no more than 15 seconds between steps.

  1. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON.
  2. Turn OFF the radio.
  3. Press the 1 and 4 buttons together. Hold them down until SEC shows on the display.
  4. Press MN and 000 will appear on the display.
  5. Press MN again to make the last two digits agree with your code.
  6. Press HR to make the first one or two digits agree with your code.
  7. Press AM-FM after you have confirmed that the code matches the secret code you have written down. The display will show -- -- --, indicating that the radio is no longer secured.

Entering the incorrect code will cause SEC to appear on the display. The radio will remain secured until the correct code is entered.

1237 is you unlock code just use hr to set the 12 and min to enter 37 and then am/fm to select. Display should show SEC. Press power and radio should be unlocked.

to disable code turn radio off and then press and hold buttons 1 & 4 till the SEC displays. then enter code again and press am/fm to select. ---- should now display. this means the radio is fully disarmed and will not lockup again.

good luck

Codes

You should have told me that you did not have the proceedure when I gave you the unlock code, Malaree. I could have walked you thru it.
You need to tell me what is on the display when you turn the radio on.
Does it say "HLP", "HELP" or SEC". This is important to the proceedure.

I had a similar problem with my 94 Saab 900, I needed to reset the radio code because the one in my user manual was wrong. If you can remove the radio from the dash (you can buy a tool or make it with metal clothes hangers). Pop the radio out and the correct code will sometimes be written on the top of the radio.

Either way entering this correct code did nothing for me on startup. But the solution is far out - turn the ignition key to "on" without starting the engine so the electrical system is on. Then leave this for 1 hour. When you return the HID will display "enter code" (exactly like if you hold down the BAND button - but that doesn't work like this does). Now enter the correct code.
