Replaced idle air control sensor and maf before I posted this. Someone had bent one side of the butterfly up to get it to idle but when you put it gear the idle drops lower then it should. I had removed and straightened the butterfly and of course it idled worse when I re installed and wanted to die when placed in gear. Sprayed carb. cleaner around all vacuum lines and intake and no change. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Look into maf and map sensors also (iac) idle air contol sensor if none of those then may have intake manifold gasket leak cuz if gasket is alowing to **** air then air/fuel mixtue is off cuz compute cant account fo the extra air added....hope this helps...may try to replace fuel filter if hasnt been done in awhile tough question wish you luck just a process of elimination.

Try this: Check each spark plug boot for any kind of condensation or granular buildup near plug connection. Spray with WD40, then shake out excess WD40 and dry with a small rolled up rag. I had new boots, #3 had the white granular material. I cleaned it as described and it solved 100% of the problem. (97 contour)

Check for vacuum leaks. These can cause awful running condition at low engine speeds but often become negligible in effect at high RPMs due to the much lower intake vacuum at high engine speeds.

Do you mean that you replaced the idle air control solenoid????? It doesn't have a sensor, as it's operation is controlled by the computer using information which the computer gathers from assorted other sensors.

Are you sure you didn't replace the throttle position sensor which is mounted right next to the IAC????

If you haven't replaced the IAC (which would almost certainly be unnecessary, as they almost never break) you should try removing it and cleaning it using spray cleaner and an old toothbrush or something similar. These IACs often become clogged with oily residue and simply require periodic cleaning to restore them to a like new state of operation.

    Good luck!

When putting van in gear the engine runs rough

how about putting the van in drive with one foot down hard on the brake and rev the engine, does it smooth out now? if it smooths out, i would pull the air cleaner tube to the throttle body and spray the throttle body with carb cleaner, be careful if using the red tube, I have had it blow off before into the intake, not good, open the accelerator and spray it out really good, it will to start until all the cleaner clears out.

1997 Ford Contour with a rough idle while stopped

This is a common complaint on these cars. I own a 96 myself.
Assuming that you engine is fine and runs smoothly under normal operation, and just is rough "feeling" at idle while stopped; then I would suggest changing the motor mounts...the mounts may not be broken, but the rubber isolators get worn and soft, and transffer normal engine vibration into the chasis of the vehicle. Mine was doing the same after changing the mounts good as new again.
Please note...don't use cheap mounts, by the better grade/quality mounts.

Idles rough when ac is off when turned on idles fine sounds like a bad miss

when the ac compressor starts the diesel flow will be reduced and so the pick up will be reduced so that the car will be tuned
