Question about 1996 Saturn SL

1 Answer

Shifter cable continues to fray on my 1996 Saturn SL1 The last one was shipped 6/2010 after a parts quality control notification. Replaced at $420 The plastic guide in the shifter tower was broken and looks only to be there to keep thing out of the area behind the tower where the platstic gromet connects the cable to the shifter. Mine has never broken. Is this piece necessary for funtion? The cable moves within its' sheathing and is held in place at both ends and supported at the firewall.

Something appears to be out of line, but if it's still working...that is good, but keep in mind that if it isn't in-line as needed that sooner or later it will create a problem.

take the console out and look under the shifter, if the shifter cables are disconnected from the shifter go to a parts store or ebay and get yourself a Saturn shifter bushing repair kit. happens all the time to S Saturns and maybe the Ls look on youtube for instructions to remove console and put on the bushing kit.

if the shifter cables are still connected you may have to be looking around for a lower mileage used transmission. 96-98 saturn will fit so long as the donor car has the same head, being DOHC or SOHC. so if you have an SL1 you can use a transmission out of another SL1, or an SC1, or an SW1. do not mix a 2 with a 1, bad mojo.

Rear lights aren't working in my 1996 saturn SL1.Not bulb problem

Check fuses next, best done with a meter or a test light. You have a panel to the right of the center console in the front where the passengers left foot is, There is also one under the hood by the left headlight area. Remember that fuses for lights are only powered with the light switch on.

Saturn SL1 Shifter to Shiftstick

I had the same problem over a year and a half ago. I went to the closest Saturn dealership to get the replacement plastic piece. Turned out that the ENTIRE shift cable assembly was the smallest part that could be purchased to repair this. The cable assembly was over $200 at that time. I opted to forgo the ridiculous expense for this tiny little plastic part. True story: with a little heavy safety wire and a large washer I jury rigged the washer to hold the end of the shift cable in the fitting at the bottom of the shift stick. The washer acts as a keeper and the wire, wrapped in a basket around the back side keeps everything together. It still shifts reliably, a little looser than when it was new, but I saved $200 in parts (99% of which weren't broken) and probably a couple of hours of labor at least. One end of the cable assembly has to be attached to the transmission by the way and is not easily accessible. Sounds hokey but it really worked, still works!
