Question about 1988 Buick Electra

1 Answer

I have a 1988 buick electra w/ 3.8 v6 engine. It runs but will not idle, has the sound of a large vacuum leak which i can't find. Have check all vacuum lines and have replaced the vacuum bypass solenoid as it was damaged. This all started with a backfire on start up last week.

Get A can of WD40; look for the flammable kind. Start the engine and spray around the manifold and any vacuum hoses you see, work your way from top down, when you get close to a vacuum leak the engine will give you an indication as it changes the speed and sound. Then look closer to identify the location of what is leaking. Hope this helps fixya up.

Surges while idling

If you have the 3.0 V6, look at the intake runners and see if there is a large black "can" towards the passenger side near the top. If it is there, the gasket for it is probably leaking vacuum. If you don't have it, check the entire engine for a vacuum leak.

My 1988 buick is running bad could this be a bad Master cylinder

If you have power brakes, and vacuum is being lost on booster (a large hose running from master cylinder to port on engine),if you pump the brakes and idle goes up and down as you pump brakes I would think there is a leak ,if you can't stop car that would lead me to think master cylinder, is the brake pedal abnormaly very low ??

Idle promblem

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak. Check all your vacuum hoses to be sure they are attached properly and also look for cracks in them

2002 altima idling too high check engine light on

The first and easiest thing you should do or have someone do, is check under the hood for a vacuum leak, possibly coming from a cracked or broken hose. Check and inspect all rubber hoses, including the large ribbed hose running to the throttle body (Engine air intake from the air filter box). You can hear a leak if it is loud enough and will sound like a hiss. Your engine is idling high because of a vacuum leak.

My 98 Chevy Malibu v6 3.1 liter engine high idling

You probably have a large vacuum leak. With the engine running, listen under the hood for a hissing sound. Check all of the rubber lines running from the intake.
