If this is not the SE-R then no you do not need to run premium in the car. If you drive the car normal and do not drive excessively hard then defiantly no premium will be needed. Hope this helps and answers your questions!

No you do not.

Regular grade unleaded is just fine unless you notice a condition called PING which will sound like a rattle from the engine under acceleration. This is caused by predetination of the fuel in the combustion chamber and is usually associated with carbon build up. Since higher octane fuel has a higher resistance to ignite it will help or eliminate ping.

A service know as a valve/intake/combustion cleaning can also help with ping and long term can be a lot cheaper than running premium.

there are other conditions that will cause this but the above is the most common.

The most likely problem is with the signals the pcm is getting from the crankshaft or camhaft position sensors. The problem could be the sensor itself, the tone ring that spins next to the sensor, or the wiring. Inspect the wiring and connectors, tone rings, and sensor installation carefully. If visual looks good, there are some tests you can run at the link below.

if your chain becomes loose it will become very noisy and should be replaced since most nissans are interference engines which means lots of money for a new engine

Car: Nissan Maxima SE 1997 tachometer broken

the dash voltage egulator probably went bad. First, check the battery & make sure you have 12 volts, not running. Check it again running & you should see about 14.5 volts. If that's good,I'd replace the guage assembly.

Location of knock senor on 97 maxima se

Your knock sensor is located Under the hood, center, front engine area, below intake manifold, mounted on block.

A defective knock sensor may cause engine detonation or reduced spark advance and fuel economy. When a knock sensor is removed and replaced, the sensor must be tightened to its specified torque. If the knock sensor is installed tighter than it should be, it may become too sensitive and provide an excessively high voltage signal, resulting in more spark ****** than required. When the knock sensor is installed looser than it should be, the knock sensor signal will be lower than normal, resulting in engine detonation.

To replace the knock sensor:
  • Disconnect the knock sensor wiring connector.
  • Then, unscrew the sensor.
  • Remove the knock sensor.
  • Reverse the procedures to install the part.

As for trouble codes, and the dealers recommendation. They are true and accurate, although I would get a second opinion from another auto shop other than the dealer. Do not disclose what you already know other than the problems you are expriencing.
