How does one go about checking the relay, hoses, check valve, and AIR pump to troubleshoot a P0410 code?

Your code received is for the Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction.
The P0410 code refers to the emissions system. The AIR pump puts air to the exhaust to lower emissions. It takes in outside air and pumps it through two one-way check valves into each bank of the exhaust.
About 90% of the time that this code is set, the one-way check valves have worn out or failed and allow water (which occurs naturally in the exhaust) back into the pump. In any cold climate, especially in climates with higher humidity, this water may be more excessive. The water partially fills the AIR pump, it can then freeze. When the PCM commands the pump on, if the pump is frozen it cannot turn, thus overloading the circuit and "popping" the fuse.
Possibly symptoms include:

  • MIL illumination obviously
  • Hesitation on acceleration
  • Noise from a bad/stuck AIR pump

A code P0410 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Water may have collected in the AIR pump or the vent solenoid and frozen or corroded the pump
  • Blown AIR pump fuse due to freezing up

Note: There is a technical service bulletin (TSB) regarding this code for a number of GM models. The TSB calls for the replacement of the AIR pump and the installation of a new secondary injection hose. Additionally, if you simply replace the AIR pump the problem may return again (and again). If you replace the pump, also clean out the hoses and replace the one-way check valve. If this is on a GM model that the TSB applies to, follow those instructions in the link above. In a few cases, people have put a small hole in the rubber cover on the pump which allows any water to drain out.
Also, please note that this may be covered under the emissions warranty on the vehicle. If your vehicle is out of bumper-to-bumper warranty, check if the emissions warranty is still valid!

    Not helpful b/c I had already found the same information posted athttp://www.obd-codes.com/p0410. My question was not "what does the P0410 code mean?" but rather, "how do you go about checking these things." Thanks anyway.

I have a 2004 cadidillac deville with code P0410 & P0420


Circuit Description
The secondary air injection (AIR) system reduces exhaust emissions after initial engine starts. This occurs when the engine start-up coolant temperature and the intake air temperature (IAT) are at the parameters indicated in Conditions for Running. The AIR pump will continue to operate until Closed Loop operation is achieved.
The powertrain control module (PCM) activates the AIR system by simultaneously supplying a ground to the AIR pump relay and the AIR solenoid relay. The AIR pump forces pressurized fresh air into the pipes/hoses and past the AIR check valve into the bank 1 exhaust manifold, accelerating the catalyst operation. When the AIR system is inactive, the AIR shut-off valve prevents airflow in either direction.
The PCM can detect an AIR system airflow fault by monitoring the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) bank 1 sensor 1 during normal Closed Loop engine operation. This is an active test. The active test will pass or fail based on the response from the HO2S 1. The active test consists of three tests run at 3-second intervals. A decreasing HO2S 1 voltage parameter response indicates that the AIR system is functioning properly.
The AIR system consists of the following components:
• The AIR pump
• The AIR pump relay
• The AIR injection electronic shut-off valve
• The AIR injection solenoid relay
• The fuses, and the related wiring
• The pipes/hoses
When the PCM detects an insufficient HO2S 1 response, DTC P0410 sets.

I have a service engine soon light on and have hooked up an OBD11 reader to it and got code P0410 pertaining to a secondary air injection problem. hoses are fine, pump is new.

Possible causes: - Faulty Vacuum hoses damaged
- Faulty Air Pump inoperative
- Air bypass solenoid harness is open or shorted
- Air bypass solenoid circuit poor electrical connection
- Air bypass solenoid leaking/blocked or stuck open/closed
- Air diverter valve leaking/blocked or stuck open/closed

Tech notes: Visually inspect AIR pump and AIR bypass valve harness and connector, if connector are OK, then replaced AIR bypass valve.

When is the code detected? The secondary air injection system does not detect the presence of air in the exhaust when introduced by the secondary air injection system.

Possible symptoms: - Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Engine hesitation
