Sometimes it is hard to start engine, I have to turn engine over for quite a while and then starts with a bit of smoke. Have just replaced plugs and distributor cap but was also like it before. Also the clock and mpg memory does not work. THANX

Have a shop hook up a scanner and test the output of the ECT sensor, if it is not within spec it can cause this problem.

Sorry ECT stands for "Engine Coolant Temperature" it is vital to tell the computer how much fuel to inject, more for the cold engine less for hot, if it is not working correctly it can be like a stuck choke in older carbureted engines.

My van is hard to start first thing in morning and has a new fuel pump

The fuel pump is just one of many components that could cause poor starting if not at peak efficiency. You don't say whether the engine is petrol or diesel powered but in both cases a good cranking speed is essential to cold starting and again in both cases sufficient fuel must be delivered into the combustion chambers in the right form; bad spray patterns due to worn or dirty injectors can cause bad starting, though most commonly in the case of petrol engines it is a poor spark or worn spark plugs and in the case of diesel engines tired or defective heater plugs that cause poor starting.

There is quite a bit to think about and quite a bit to check...

Diesel engine started then quit and let out a big puff of black smoke, it turns over but wont start

replace the injector pump. if it doesnt have sufficient pressure it will do this. does your glow plug light illuminate? if so replace the pump. this is the main unit on the centre top of the engine.

TDI GOLF that has a hard start and white smoke

Sounds like the heater plugs, and as its quite cold it will take longer to heat up, have you tried giving it one heat light then turn the ignition off again, then do it again 3 times in total then try to fire it over if it starts quite easy then its your heater plugs. timing shouldnt be out, if it was then it would seem very lumpy even when turning over.

It is sometimes hard to start my jetta tdi. When this happens and I finally get it started, qite a bit of thick smoke comes out of the exhaust. Any thoughts?

It is hard starting my VW 2003 Jetta. It usually take 5 to 10 cranking before it turns over. Then it run normally. It only happens when the car has not been driven for about 6 hours.

1997 Saturn SL1 very hard to start

jlwhelen,
I will suggest that perhaps the blue smoke is not purely oil. It sounds like you may have an ignition problem where the engine has a hard time firing until warmed. The blue smoke may be, at least in part, unspent fuel. I realize that a warm engine that uses oil will smoke blue, but excessively rich conditions on startup can result in a similar effect. If the choke circuit is delivering a little extra fuel from a dirty injector, the problem may be worse when starting from cold.
To remedy this, I would suggest a simple replacement of plugs and wires, as well as a fuel injector cleaner through the tank. I would bet money that these simple maintenance points would solve your problem.

Good luck!

Engine in 1997 GMC Safari acts like it is trying to start but

Take off your gas cap and have someone stand there with thier ear at the hole, (no smoking), turn the key to on just before start and they should hear the fuel pump humming. if they dont then try to start. if it doesnt start turn key off and at that instant the pump should be heard again. What i think is happening is your pump is not energizing . Its supposed to energize when turning your key on and off. This can be caused by a bad fuel pump or pump relay switch. Hope this helps. please rate me

1989 honda civic randomly hard to start

Is the vehicle wanting to turn over? If not at all, look at the ignition switch, sometimes the contacts wear down and intermittant problems arise, such as not starting or car will die while driving.
