Bank 1 is the side were the #1 cylinder is. po420 catylist below threshold ( bank 1 ). if your check engine light is on for a P0420 code( bad converter ) and you decide not to fix it, another more serious code could be triggered and you'd never know. it could the back 02 sensor also, behind convertor. have a mechanic check it out.

Gas cap replaced. Ses still on. theres a small amount of water leak on the two bolt flange of the converter to exhaust. is this the reason why the ses light is on ?codep0420? Is it safe to erase it?

That water is just the normal water vapor produced by the action of the Catalytic converter. The P420 code you have indicates the catalytic converter in that bank is either worn out or the sensor is defective. If the car is very high miles then it is very likely both are the problem. P0420 code evap system

This is not an evap code. Read on:
P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1

Possible causes- Three way catalyst converter Bank 1
- Exhaust tube
- Intake air leaks
- Fuel injectors may be faulty
- Fuel injector leaks
- Spark plugs may be faulty
- Improper ignition timing
- Engine Control Module (ECM)
Tech notes The most common cause it the three way catalyst converter Bank 1. Changing just the O2 sensor usually don't repair the problem. If the P0420 code is combined with other codes, try fixing the other codes first.

06 lincoln navigator check engine code p0420 what that mean

There is a problem with the catalytic converter. P0420 sets when the downstream o2 sensor is either reading higher than expected or reading simular to the upstream O2 sensor. Either way it is usually the catalytic converter that is the source of the problem and rarely the downstream O2 sensor.

The Catalytic converter is located in the exhaust system under the car. Catalytic converters from either the dealer or a quality direct fit part from a reputable manufacturer are recommended. Cheap cats lead to lots of problems!

2002 vw jetta 2.0 code P0420

The error code definition reads:

"Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1"

It's possible it might be the oxygen sensor, but it's more than likely the catalytic converter. This is a relatively common code for VW's.

You can google "p0420" and see the posts...

#1 When you replace 02 sensors you should always replace all of them. Otherwise the new 02 sensor will be returning its Data back to the computer faster than the other old ones and this in itself may cause problems. #2 the P0420 indicates that the Catalysts System Efficiency is below the threshold on bank #1 And yes put in all new sensors and that means bank 1 sensor #2 as well. And then if the P0420 code returns replace the Catalatic converter on Bank#1.Please let me know the results. Good Luck and have a good XMASS.
