Question about 1990 Dodge W150

Bought a new alt. for a 1990 w150 p/u. gauge showes its not charging. need to know where regulator is located and pic. of what it looks like.

The engine computer is also the voltage regulator.

I copied the following from another site. It might be something you should look at.

"The voltage regulator is built-in to the ECM...about a $275 part! However, before you jump to conclusions about the voltage regulator being defective, I'd highly recommend that you go visit the autozone website and follow the "Check charging system" word for word. I discovered that the alternator in my 1990 Dodge van wasn't grounding? How could that be? It's bolted to a metal bracket, right? Could be corrosion, could be rust? I even installed a second ground strap from engine to body. Nothing worked until I ran a ground wire from the battery to the alternator case. Charged just great then! Of course I discovered this after first replacing the alternator and the ECM! Don't you make the same (expensive) mistake."

Battery and voltage


Battery. New doesn't always mean good. Could have set on shelf. Have AutoZone or advance check it.

Ammeter reads 18V with engine running.


I'm assuming you mean the charging voltage indicator. This is an indication of an incorrect charging voltage (too high, should be from 12.5 to 14 volts). This problem is most likely caused by a bad charging voltage regulator. There are two variations of the location of the regulator: 1) regulator is outside of the alternator and located on right side of the engine compartment on the wheel-well, below the starter relay or 2) The regulator is inside the alternator (in which case you'd have to replace the alternator).

I have a 1990 dodge w150 4x4. put new alt & battery in it. still not charging wright. pull positive cable and motor dies. already went through 4 alt. could it be the black box that connects at the alt.


you need to check your electrical system with a digital volt meter-when the vehicle sits overnight, the battery should read about 12.5 volts before startup. You should get the same (or very close) reading at the large post on the rear of the alternator, then start it up. Readings should go to close to 15 volts, and gradually drop down to close to 14 volts at idle, again at the battery and the rear of the alternator. If it is much less than 14 (like 13) or more than 15 (like 16) you have a problem either with the voltage regulator or the ecm.

79 W150 318 WILL NOT CHARGE: NEW ALT, VOLT REG, ECU, BALLEST RESISTOR. HAVE BEEN CHASING A SHORT. IF AMP METER IS BAD WILL IT SHOW ANY MOVEMENT? (EX. RUNNING SHOWS SLIGHT DISCHARGE...HEADLIGHTS,WIPERS OR...


Check the battery + wire at the alternator to be sure it is 'hot'. If not, the alternator can not charge. If you suspect a short, check all the fusible links. Pull on each one, as I have seen many that have a burned or broken conductor but the outer insulation is not burned open. (You can buy fusible links and fusible wire to make your own)

Ammeters on your vintage Dodge are notorious for failing, and for being inaccurate. Just in case yours failed internally, jump the 2 wires together, (The gauge will then not work), but if it charges now you know its open.
But check out the alt power feed first, as well as the fusible links and I bet you'll find the problem.

Your truck uses an external regulator. I would change that part. It is located Under hood, center, rear engine area, mounted on upper firewall

I do not know about that,but make sure the large wire on the alternator is going to the positive cable on the battery.

I am assuming you are now using a 1976 style GM alt.
The most common and popular model.
You need one 10 gauge wire from the battery to the alternator output.
This can be run directly from the battery +.
Run a short 10 gauge wire from alt output to large wire at regulator plug on alt.
Run small wire on alt reg plug to Bat light wire.
A new alt regulator plug pigtail can be bought at any parts store and is recommended.

The existing regulator should have the connections marked.
One of those wires will be the bat light wire if needed.
If you have a amp meter or voltmeter in the vehicle.....use your existing large output wire (usually red) to hook up to the new alt output connection.
