Having trouble getting to the intermediate shaft-to-steering gear pinch bolt. I can't get the boot high enough

    I had the car 2and1/2 feet in the air I could reach the boot but could not push it up high enough to get a wrench on it. I did keep trying and got a pry bar to push it up and did egt the job done last night . Which is when i needed the help with some suggestions.

Try using bicks under the axels to lift up the car more.

Here you are - power rack & pinion.

Except 2.2L and 1993-96 3.1L Engines
See Figure 1
  1. Raise the intermediate shaft seal and remove intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt.
  2. Remove the air cleaner and disconnect the pressure hoses from the steering gear.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands, then remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
  4. Remove the cotter pins and nuts from both tie rod ends. Using tool J-6627 or BT-7101, press the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.
  5. If equipped with an Air Management pipe, remove the bracket bolt from the crossmember.
  6. Remove the 2 rear cradle mounting bolts and lower the rear of the cradle about 4-5 in. (102-127mm).

WARNING
If the rear of the cradle is lowered too far, the engine components nearest the cowl may be damaged.
  1. If equipped, remove the rack and pinion heat shield.

  1. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts, then the gear assembly through the left wheel opening.
To install:
  1. Install the gear assembly through the left wheel opening and install the mounting bolts.
  2. Install the heat shield.
  3. Raise the rear of the cradle and install the mounting bolts.
  4. Install the bracket bolt to the crossmember under the air management pipe.
  5. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles, install the retaining nuts and insert new cotter pins.
  6. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  7. Install the high pressure hoses to the steering gear and install the air cleaner.
  8. Install the intermediate shaft seal and the intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt.
2.2L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Install an engine support fixture J-28467-A, or the equivalent.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  5. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
  6. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from stub shaft.

CAUTION
Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.
  1. Remove the exhaust pipe hanger bracket near rear of frame including the brake line retainer and rubber exhaust pipe hangers.
  2. Remove the engine and transaxle mount nuts at the subframe.
  3. Support the rear of the subframe with jack stands.
  4. Remove the rear subframe bolts and discard.
  5. Lower the subframe for access to rack and pinion.
Do not lower the rear of the cradle too far, as damage to engine components nearest the cowl may result.
  1. Remove the cotter pins and castle nuts from the outer tie rod ends and separate the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles using a suitable puller.
  2. Disconnect the power steering lines from the steering gear.
  3. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts and nuts.

To Install:
  1. Install the rack and pinion through left wheel opening.

  6. Raise the subframe into position and install new frame mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  7. Remove the jack.
  8. Install the engine mount and transaxle mount nuts and tighten to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm).
  9. Install the exhaust pipe hanger bracket near the rear of frame including brake line retainer and rubber exhaust pipe hanger.
  10. Connect the intermediate shaft to the stub shaft and tighten the pinch bolt to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  11. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Remove the support fixture.

How to replace rack an pinion cutlass ciera 1992


You aren't saying what engine is in it, or whether it is manual or power steering. Here is the R/R procedure for power steering rack for all engine sizes.

Except 2.2L and 1993-96 3.1L Engines
See Figure 1
  1. Raise the intermediate shaft seal and remove intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt.
  2. Remove the air cleaner and disconnect the pressure hoses from the steering gear.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands, then remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
  4. Remove the cotter pins and nuts from both tie rod ends. Using tool J-6627 or BT-7101, press the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.
  5. If equipped with an Air Management pipe, remove the bracket bolt from the crossmember.
  6. Remove the 2 rear cradle mounting bolts and lower the rear of the cradle about 4-5 in. (102-127mm).

WARNING
If the rear of the cradle is lowered too far, the engine components nearest the cowl may be damaged.
  1. If equipped, remove the rack and pinion heat shield.

  1. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts, then the gear assembly through the left wheel opening.
To install:
  1. Install the gear assembly through the left wheel opening and install the mounting bolts.
  2. Install the heat shield.
  3. Raise the rear of the cradle and install the mounting bolts.
  4. Install the bracket bolt to the crossmember under the air management pipe.
  5. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles, install the retaining nuts and insert new cotter pins.
  6. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle.

    My rack and pion is leaking , how do i replace


    To Remove:
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section. NOTE: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly (clock spring) to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the assembly.
    2. Lock the steering column by installing the J42640 into the underside of the steering column.
    3. Raise and support the vehicle.
    4. Remove the tires and wheels.
    5. Remove the power steering gear heat shield.
    6. Remove or disconnect the following: CAUTION
      Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control, which could result in personal injury.
      • Intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt and coupling from gear
      • Pressure and return pipes from the gear
      • Electrical connector, if equipped
        Stabilizer shaft links at lower control arms
      • Remove the left stabilizer shaft insulator.
      • Rotate the stabilizer shaft to access steering gear bolts.
      • The outer tie rod retaining nuts.
      • Using J24319-B separate the outer tie rods from the steering knuckles.
      • Rack and pinion attaching bolts
      • Rack and pinion assembly through the left wheel opening.
    7. Transfer the outer tie rods if replacing the power steering gear.
    To Install:
    1. Install or connect the following:
      • Rack and pinion assembly through the left wheel opening and tighten the bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
      • Electrical connector, if equipped
        Pressure and return lines to the steering gear and tighten the fittings to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
      • Heat shield and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 7 ft. Lbs. (10 N)
      • Install the left stabilizer shaft insulator.
    2. Install stabilizer shaft Links to lower control arms
    3. Intermediate shaft to the steering gear and tighten the pinch bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
    4. Install the outer tie rods to the steering knuckles.
    5. Install the outer tie rods retaining nuts. torque the nuts to 22ft.lbs(30 Nm) plus an additional 180 degrees.
    6. Install the tires and wheels.
    7. Lower the vehicle.
    8. Remove the steering column anti rotation pin from the steering column.
    9. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
    10. Adjust the front toe.

    Lock the steering column by installing the Steering Column Anti Rotation Pin tool J 42640 into the underside of the steering column--Aurora

    1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
    2. Remove the tires and wheels.
    3. Remove the stabilizer shaft links from the control arms.

    Power Steering Gear
    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

    1. Raise and safely support the vehicle, allowing the front suspension to hang
      freely.
    2. Remove both front tire and wheel assemblies.
      CAUTION
      Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft
      from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear
      and/or intermediate shaft. This damage may cause a loss of steering control and
      possibly, personal injury.
      NOTE: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the
      steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or
      intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR
      coil assembly to become uncentered, which will damage the coil.




    3. If equipped, move the intermediate shaft cover upward, then unfasten the
      intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt.
    4. Using a suitable puller, separate both tie rod ends from the steering
      knuckles.
    5. Position a suitable drain pan under the power steering fluid lines. Remove
      the power steering fluid line retainer, then disconnect the outlet and inlet
      hoses from the steering gear. Allow the fluid to drain, then plug the lines to
      avoid contaminating the system.

    6. Remove the steering gear assembly-to-chassis mounting bolts.
    7. Support the body with suitable jackstands to allow for the lowering of the
      frame.
    8. Loosen the front frame mounting bolts.
    9. Remove the rear frame bolts, then lower the rear of the frame about 3 inches
      (76mm).
      WARNING
      Do not lower the frame too far, or you could
      damage the engine components nearest the cowl.


    10. Remove the steering gear assembly by maneuvering it through the left wheel
      well opening.

      To install:

    11. Install the rack and pinion assembly into the vehicle, maneuvering it
      through the left wheel well opening.
    12. Raise the rear of the frame, then install the frame bolts and tighten to 76
      ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
    13. Install the rack and pinion assembly-to-chassis bolts. Tighten the rack
      mounting bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
    14. Remove the jackstands.
    15. Apply Loctite® thread locking kit 1052624, or equivalent thread locking
      compound to the steering gear mounting bolts.
    16. Install the steering gear mounting bolts, and washers, then tighten the
      retainers to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm) in the sequence shown in the accompanying
      figure.
    17. Unplug and attach the power steering gear outlet and inlet hoses, then
      tighten the fittings to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
    18. Install the power steering fluid line retainer.
    19. Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Tighten the nuts to 35
      ft. lbs. (47 Nm). Install a new cotter pin. Tighten the nut up to an additional
      1?6 turn,
      or to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) to align the cotter pin slot. Do not loosen the nut to
      install the cotter pin.
    20. Install the intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt and tighten to 35
      ft. lbs. (47 Nm). If equipped, move the intermediate shaft cover upward into
      position.
    21. Install both front tire and wheel assemblies, then carefully lower the
      vehicle.
    22. Refill the power steering pump reservoir, then bleed the power steering
      system and check for leaks.
    23. Take the vehicle to a reputable repair shop and have the front end alignment
      checked and adjusted as necessary.

    How to replace steering rack


    Copied from AutoZone.com:
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2. Turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position and remove the key from the ignition.
    3. Turn the wheel counterclockwise in order to lock the steering column in place.
    4. Raise and support the vehicle.
    5. Remove the front wheels.
      WARNING Do not rotate the intermediate shaft once separated from the gear. Possible damage or a malfunction could occur.

    6. Remove the steering gear to intermediate shaft pinch bolt and discard.
    7. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
    8. Remove both steering gear outer tie rod to knuckle nuts and discard the nuts.
      WARNING Do not attempt to separate the joint using a wedge type tool.
    9. Separate the outer tie rods from the steering knuckles.
    10. Remove the steering gear bolts.
    11. Remove the rear transaxle mount.
    12. Carefully remove the steering gear from the frame and the vehicle through the LH wheel opening.

    To install:
    1. Install the steering gear to the frame through the LH wheel opening.
    2. Install the steering gear bolts. Tighten the bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
    3. Install the rear transaxle mount. Tighten the rear transaxle mount to frame bolts. Tighten the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
    4. Tighten the rear transaxle mount thru bolt. Tighten the thru bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    5. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear.
    6. Install a new intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Tighten the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
    7. Install the outer tie rods to the steering knuckles.
    8. Install new outer tie rod nuts. Tighten the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
    9. Install the front wheels.
    10. Lower the vehicle.
    11. Adjust the toe if necessary.

    Removal Procedure

    Notice: Do not rotate steering shaft after steering column has been removed. Damage to SIR components may occur.

    Lock the steering column through the access hole in the steering column lower trim cover using the J 42640.
    Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator Replacement in Powertrain Management.Remove the intermediate shaft shield from the steering gear.Place a drain pan below the steering gear. Remove the pressure and the return hoses from the power steering gear. Cap or tape the ends of the hoses and the gear fittings in order to prevent dirt from entering the system.Remove the lower intermediate shaft coupling bolt. Draw alignment marks on the lower intermediate shaft coupling and the steering shaft. Remove the lower intermediate shaft coupling from the steering shaft. Remove the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement.Remove the steering gear mounting bolts and the washers from the frame. Remove the steering gear.
    Installation Procedure


    Install the steering gear. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. Install the power steering gear to the frame washers and the mounting bolts. Tighten Tighten the power steering gear to frame mounting bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.). Install the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement.Install the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear. Ensure that the alignment marks line up. Install the lower intermediate shaft coupling bolt. Tighten Tighten the lower intermediate shaft coupling bolt to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.). Install the pressure and the return hoses to the power steering gear. TightenTighten the pressure hose to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) for the vehicle equipped with the 2.2L engines. Tighten the pressure hose to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) for the vehicle equipped with the 4.3L engines. Tighten the return hose to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). Install the intermediate shaft shield to the power steering gear. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator Replacement in Powertrain Management. Unlock the steering column by removing the J 42640 from the steering column lower steering column trim cover access hole. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding Power Steering System in Steering / Service and Repair.

    I need to know how i remove the intermediate steering shaft on 2000 sunfire


    Hi remove the LEFT front wheel you will see the steering rack lift the rubber boot on the rack there will be a 11mm /7/16 pinch bolt you may have to turn the steering to get to the bolt remove the pinch bolt slide the shaft off the rack now go under the dash remove hush pannel if equiped at the bottom of the column there will be another boot pull it back there will be another pinch bolt remove it slide the steering shaft off the column
    CAREFULL NOT TO ROTATE THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE SHAFT IS DISCONNECTED OR YOU WILL DAMAGE THE SIR COIL
    pull the shaft up through the boot
    then rev prev. for reinstalling

    Power steering rack


    jj, here's the procedure:
    turn ignition key to locked position and turn steering wheel to the left until the wheel is locked. Remove key.
    While vehicle still on ground disconnect the steering column shaft coupler from the steering gear intermediate coupler. Remove the cotter key the nut and the pinch bolt.
    Loosen wheel lug, raise vehicle support securely w/ jack stands, remove the wheels.
    Raise the insulating wrap on the power steering return hose to expose the hose clamp. Remove the hose clamp and detach the hose, Drain ps fluid thru the hose.
    Remove both tie rod ends from steering knuckles.
    Remove the 2 bolts and loosen the 3rd attaching the anti-lock brakes Hydraulic control Unit (HCU) to the suspension cradle.
    then rotate the HCU rearward to allow access to the cradle bolt and nut just forward of the hcu.
    Remove the nuts and bolts attaching the cradle plate to the bottom of the front suspension cradle, then remove cradle plate from cradle.
    Remove bracket attaching power steering fluid line to the front suspension cradle.
    Detach ps.fluid pressure and return lines from the ps gear.
    Remove the 3 bolts and nuts mounting the steering gear to the front suspension cradle.
    Lower the steering gear from the suspension cradle enough to allow access to the intermediate coupler roll pin. Install a roll pin remover/installer tool (they always get u with that darn special tool, don't they?) or equivalent set up. Pull the roll pin out of the intermediate coupler. Separate the intermediate coupler from the shaft of the steering gear Remove the steering gear assembly from the suspension cradle. Well, it's too late to give the install procedure, but u seem to have it under control, so let me know if u need more info and how u make out! Merry Christmas!
