How do I adjust the belt on the alternater

Most alternators are connected to the engine block by a metal bracket. One end of the alternator connects to a harness pivot point (a bit like your elbow), while the other connects to another bracket with a slot a few inches long (and curved). The bolt that goes through the curved/slotted bracket needs to be loosened (NOT removed), enough so you can pull the alternator in the direction which tightens the alternator belt... and when you get to that tight point, you quickly tighten the alternator tension bolt that you had previously loosened. (this is usually accomplished much easier with a tool that will allow you to easily pull the alternator tight while you tighten the bolt, or by having your Bestie there to to one action whilst you perform the other). After you are finished, you should check the belt's recommended tension parameter to make certain it's not too tight (which will cause the alternator bearing to wear-out quickly), or not too lose (which may cause the belt to squeak or your lights/power to dim with a drain on the alternator). Good luck. Normally the only pain with this job is the placement of the alternator. If it's on the top of the engine assembly (most are), then it will be easier. If it's not, then it won't... but this just means you'll have tighter quarters to work within.

Mounting brackets for power steering and alternator

Unless your car was involved in an accident that damaged them, one doesn't usually have to replace the mounting brackets. Do you mean you need to replace the belt? Is it too loose to work properly?

Inspect/Test/Service/Replace Follow service manual procedures given by the manufacturer for the generator you are working on for disassembling, inspecting, testing, and rebuilding AC generators. Remember, improper connections to an AC generator can destroy it.
AC generator removal varies according to the engine size, engine placement, and vehicle accessories (such as power steering and air conditioning). The following is the typical procedure for removal and replacement of the AC generator.
  • Place fender covers over the fenders
  • Disconnect the battery ground cable

CAUTION
Never attempt to remove the alternator or disconnect any wires to the alternator without first disconnecting the battery negative cable. It's a good practice to wrap the cable with tape or insert the cable inside a rubber hose to prevent accidental contact with the battery terminal.Always wear safety glasses when working around the battery.

  • Disconnect and label the wiring harness connections to the alternator (Painters Masking tape works very well for labeling Automotive wiring).
  • Loosen the alternator pivot bolt.
  • Remove the bolt that attaches the alternator to the adjustment arm.
  • Rotate the alternator to loosen the drive belt and disengage the belt from the pulley. Be careful that any spacers that are used in mounting are kept with their original bolts. This will make correct reinstallation much easier.
  • While supporting the alternator remove the pivot bolt.
  • Remove the alternator from the vehicle.
To reinstall the alternator, reverse the removal procedure.
To adjust the belt tension, leave the pivot and adjusting arms loose. Look up the belt tension specification for the vehicle you are working on. Using a belt tension gauge on the belt apply pressure to the alternator until the correct belt tension registers on the gauge and tighten the mounting and adjustment bolts to the specified torque specification.

CAUTION
Over tightening of the alternator drive belt will cause the unit to whine and premature failure of the alternator drive end bearing, the water pump or the engine crankshaft

Drive belt schematic for 1984 chevy 6.2L diesel

I have an 82 6.2 and I suspect they are the same. The innermost belt runs over the fan to the A/C unit and down under the power steering back to the crank. The middle belt runs over the fan to the power steering. The out side belt runs over the fan to the alternator. Hope this helps.
