Question about 1986 Chevrolet Chevy

2 Answers

Need help figuring out what's going on with my truck 1986 Chevy truck (305, quadrajet carb ). Can't start it with out using starting fluid or adding gas to carburetor. Once started, runs smooth, until I try to take it out on the road. When accelerating it starts to choke out. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

The carb on that engine has an electric choke. Make sure it is closing all the way when the engine is stone cold. You also have a vacuum operated choke pull off that opens the choke plate partially to prevent flooding. That should happen as soon as the engine starts.
You also need to check the accelerator pump. Do that by looking down into the carb and working the throttle. (with the engine not running) You should see two squirts of fuel, one in each front venturi. If you do not see it, the pump is bad and the carb needs to be rebuilt or at least the pump part replaced. That will cause a bad stumble off the line because the added fuel overcomes the transition from the idle circuit to the run circuit in the carb. With that not working the engine will fall flat on it's face on acceleration, either bogging or completely stalling.
I don't think I need to say this but on a carbureted car, you need to pump the gas a few times before start up, unlike injected engines where you just turn the key and go.

Carb needs rebuilt, Auto choke not working properly. Be easy on the starting fluid you can easly blow a hole in top of piston.

I have an 87 firebird that has a 305 with quadrajet carb and after driving for 15 min it will sputter and die. I'll wait fifteen min and it would start back up but now when it happened last time it won't...

where to start . I'd say it is fuel related so start with the carb and give it a good clean out , note the jets a bottom of the bowls , look out for any worn , loose fuel or vacuum pipes etc ,check also the spark and leads , distributer , this is not easy to diagnose without seeing the vehicle

Choke ligt on at idle 1986 chevy w/ quadrajet carb

sounds like the float is sticking or may have a hole in it, you can try adding some automatic transmission fluid to the gas - sometimes works if it sticking, check for a vaccume leak - but usually won't overfuel with a leak- but has happend.

1985 chevy c20 vacuum problems

on this truck the vacuum is pretty basic, im guessing you have a 305 (5.0) or a 350 (5.7), on the front of the engine compartment near the fan shroud somewhere (if it is still intact) you should have a diagram of all the vac lines
you probably have a quadrajet carb, if you are mechanical and patient they are not hard to rebuild

blowing out the carb with carb and choke cleaner isnt a bad idea either, have someone keep it running and slowly run like 1/4 to 1/2 a can down the carb spraying all around

Where is the fuel filter on 1984 Silverado 4x4 pickup with a 305 cid?

If you have the original quadrajet carb it has a small inline fuel filter located on the front of the carb. This applies to both 2bbl and 4bbl 500-650 cfm carbs

1981 chevy pickup with a carburated 305 is hard starting, runs rough and when warmed up runs fine.......have replaced two carbs and the problem still exists......the carb im using now is a factory rebuilt...

Is the choke operating properly? You say the current carb has an electric choke, so I am assuming the original carb did not have an electric choke. If that's the case, have you wired the electric choke to a power supply?

Check with some of your local shops that rebuild carbs, they can probably set you up with one. A new one will have to come from GM likely. You have the best idea in going to a junkyard and cannabilizing, I think. Hope this helps.
