I see you have been given advise on the initial issue.
I agree it will need to be overhauled or replaced.
You are now searching for identification.
Ok, here is a transmission pan identification pattern. This is the easiest way.

    Hello Gib.

    Unfortunately, no, it does not.
The vacuum line affects shift points but not whether the transmission engages into reverse.
The problem is internal and is common for failure.
I do not overhaul transmissions in my shop. But we do diagnostics and then send them to a trans shop for repairs.
It may be worth your while to have it repaired rather than replace with a used unit. Unless you know for sure that the replacement is a good one.

If your truck is somewhat original and there is no vacuum line it either has the line missing or it has a 400 turbo trand in it. If the line is missing it should have been hooked to a modulator on the rear of the trans passenger side about 5 to 10 inches from the very back depending on the tail shaft housing, The other end should hook to direct manifold vacuum.

It would have a electric detent with one wire going to it on the drivers side of the trans about in the middle.
If the wire or vacuum hose is in good order, you may need to rebuild the trans, Any repair labor would be too much to justify the cost sinse the entire rebuild kit including a rebuilt torque converter.

MAP sensor to carburetor vacumm line if cracked or broken will cause Tranny problems and additional idle problems.

The vacuum modulator does control the firmness of the shifts but it should not allow it to slip. No vacuum signal because of damaged or non connected lines would make the transmission think you were at full throttle all the time and in theory firm up the shifts. A full vacuum signal all the time would give you softer shifts.

Trans sticks in 2nd gear

"...he had to put hi foot on the gas pedal several times..." I do not understand what this means, but does it still fine? If it is then you likely had a stuck shift valve, but why is the valve stuck? Is the valve body contaminated as a result of the trans "coming apart". If it is still not shifting out of second gear then you may have a 3-4 clutch problem, which is a very common failure and requires overhaul to correct it.

1993 pontiac firebird automatic transmission will drive good but when I shift into reverse it will not move?

its not a sure fire fix but my 93 trans am did the same thing it had all forard driving gears and acted fine but no reverse so i with no better solution changed out the trans fluid and filter and just kept driving it but before i whent anywhere while the car was running i cycled it through the gears everytime b4 i left and about 2 weeks later i started it up and reverse was back i think it was due to a metal shaving that got lodged in one of the valve bodies a trans fluid flush is also a good idea i hope ur as lucky as i was

Typically and this is how it works on my 94 chevy suburban.

Put the truck into neutral.
apply the emergency brake
press the brake pedal and move the 4X4 shifter into 4wd lo
Than put the vehicle back in park release the emergency brake
and you should good to go from there.

please let me know if you need any further assistance with your vehicle and i would be glad to help you.

Trannsmisson Problems

check carefully to make sure it is shifting from 1st to 2nd.... there is a "sun reactor shell" inside the transmission that when broken causes reverse, 2nd and fourth to be lost. it is an extremely common failure.

best way to check.... drive along with the gear shift lever in "2" you should feel one shift as you accelerate. then carefully bump it into "3" or "D" whichever the case may be. another shift should be felt. if you do not feel a shift, you have likely stripped the teeth of that shell. hope this helps..

Transmission wont shift into 3rd gear.

I had this exact problem on my 2005 5.3L Suburban... It would shift into 1 and 2 and reverse, but not 3 and 4.

I took it into a transmission shop, and he said the 3-4 shift solenoid was burned up. Wanted 1500 to fix it. Far from home, so I have to pay it.
