Hello wsarah03,

There is a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted on the transaxle, that is a good place to start. The VSS tells the powertrain management system when and how to shift the transmission and also gives the speedometer it's signal.

From your description that the speedometer quit working at the same time I would suspect the a faulty VSS.

netvan

1998 mercury sable has something slipping when you turn left is the cv joint bas or is it something else

How does it feel like slipping ? Like the tires slipping on a wet road ?
Does the car slide around ?
Usually a cv joint or hub bearing will make a noise when failing.

My blower dosn't work to curculate the air and heat in my car and tranny slps but i have fluid on the dipsick

You will need a complete transmission
rebuild, if you have any slipping

Slipping starts long before you notice it

Tauras & Sable transaxle life is well less
than 100,000 miles

I have a 1995 sable and the speedo quit and down shifts hard any ideas

Probably the speed sensor on the tranny, but may be the gears inside. The part is only $20 and a quick do it yourself, so I recommend replacing it to see if that does it. If not, you're into the tranny to fix little nylon gears, etc. Please let me know if you have questions.

Transmission just quit.can move shifter wont engage.fluid in trans is full

there real bad on the auto matic tranmistions going out on them alot of times it is the low gear pack that goes out. the low gear pack also has reverse in it so when the trans goes out it no longer shifts right. and it will not give any warning on doing such so u need a new transmision

Does the speedo have a fuse

I am not sure.  I know my brother in laws 2000 ford taurus speedo quit working and come to find out it was the sensor on the transmission.  Cost 15 bucks and is working now.

1996 MERCURY SABLE 65,000 MILES ON SPEEDO. TRANSMISSION STARTED TO SLIP ALSO RUST UNDER VEHICLE. LINCOLN MERCURY STATED REPAIR WOULD COST 4 TO 5 THOUSAND DOLLARS AND YOU MIGHT AS WELL JUNK THE VEHICLE

Transmission problems are an issue with Sables. If you Google transmission and Mercury Sable you will come to quite a few complaints. There are actually a few posts on this website where folks are having issue too. Personally a cheap o-ring in my 1999 Sable went out resulting in a $1800 transmission repair bill. I literally gave the car away about three years ago. In almost 20 years of owning vehicles the two years I had the Sable was the most expensive and busiest in the way of repairs.
