The tank selection device is located in the frame, it is expensive and is probably your culprit. It is has valves which open and close as you switch tanks. It should have blocked the line to back tank as it changed to front tank.

This is called the tank selecter valve. Most of them are located inside the frame on the drivers side about midway back.

Fuel runs from back tank to front sometimes

If your driving a ford truck the fuel pump assy that is in the tank that is recieving the gas is leaking and allowing fuel to enter. Ford uses a valve in the fuel pump assy that is activated when fuel pressure is applied to it and it opens a port and allows the excess fuel to return back to the tank. They do not use a switching valve between tanks just whichever pump is activated allows fuel to return to that tank. When this valve fails fuel is returned to this tank all the time, pumping it from one tank to the other.
If you dont have a Ford the switching valve assy. is probably faulty.

I have a 2000 gmc 3500hd,the fuel gauge stopped at half way and i run out of fuel. the rear tank is not sending fuel to the front tank?

David Johnson is wrong about that. The Chevy HD dual tank has two sending units, one in each tank , one fuel pump, a fuel pump relay switch and a equalizing pump. If the truck stalls out at 1/2 tank, it is the equalizing pump. That pump, pumps fuel from the rear tank to the front. If the pump is out, the front tank empties, the truck shuts down, the guage reads half tank because the back tank is still full, but the equalizing pump won't pump the rear fuel tank load to the front. Hence the problem you listed above, not a sending unit.

My fuel is being sucked from the rear tank to the front how can i disconnect the front tank

Its very hard to plug the front tank. I had the same problem and found that each fuel pump has a check valve built into the pump so when you switch tanks it wont let fuel be pumped from tank to tank. Mine had no switching valve only the switch in the cab switched power from pump to pump and the built in check valves in each pump prevents fuel from being pumped back into that tank when the other one is pumping. It took me weeks to figure that out so I hope it helps...

Check your fuel pump in the front tank. The fact that it begins to stall - tells me that the valve is actually working - the front fuel pump just isn't pump fuel.

I have a 94 f 150 the rear tank works but no fuel to the engine when you switch to the front would this be the tank selector and is it in front of side tank

Each tank has its own fuel pump. Usually its the pump that goes out. You might also notice that fuel is tranfering its self to the non-working tank which means part of the fuel return valve is going out too. Another very good reason to replace the whole fuel pump assembly and not just the pump. I mean when you go thru the effort of dropping the tank to replace the pump, might as well put all new components in so you only do it once. On my 95 F150 the side tank was the front one and the rear was centered further back

You are right. There are three pumps. It sounds like the transfer pump in the front tank is bad. The in tank pumps just supply the high pressure pump to keep it primed. You need the front pump.
