First check the level of water in the battery...if its totally dry, get a new battery and don't even mess with it. if its a maintenance free battery and more than three years old, replace the battery! try to replace with with nothing less than 600 cold chanking amps! i don't know where you live but if you live in a colder climate you'll need probably a 900 cca! first off, when a person jump starts your battery you are not supposed to hook up the negative to the dead find a good solid piece of metal on the engine to clip it on to.also when you have hooked it up correctly get in the good car and rev it to 2k for about two minutes to give the dead battery a charge then try to start the other car..if it doesnt start it my need a better engine ground. sounds to me though that just buying a new battery would solve all your problems!

When jump starting a car the negative (NEG) leads must NOT go to the POS terminal.

It is always POS to POS and NEG to NEG or to an earthing point on the car.

If the leads are connected the wrong way round like you describe this will cause major problems with the electronics in the car. This can occur anywhere from the ignition system to frying the main computer (ECU) and effecting other component such as ABS, alternator etc....

If the leads were connected properly and the car started and runs poorly or fails to start afterwards then you should suspect a problem with either a bad battery failing to retain a charge or an alternator which is not supplying a charge.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Hello there,

I believe the guy that jump started it mixed up the poles (positive with negative etc) and that caused the battery to die. Cant get any simpler than that (The smoke and spark caused verify that).
The car should be able to run for a bit with whats left from the charge initially but if the battery's gone dead it will stop completely at a point as it will not get any additional charge with the engine running (things will be worse if you had a/c running at the same time or lights that take a lot of electricity).

I have faced a similar problem with my own nissan, although not as bad as yours (spark and everything) but, I didnt leave the other car's engine running to charge the battery full and sometimes now it has difficulty when i hit the switch to start.

Overall, in my opinion get a new car battery. Very simple.

Might of burnt all your computers. Are you able to turn lights on with the jumper wires connected properly ? Does your vehicle do anything with the key in the "on position" ?

How do you give a jump start to someone using a 2007 Dodge Charger?

The underhood connections can work by themselves...POS to POS, and NEG to NEG...sometimes dirty/weak connections do not allow the power to transfer fully from the underhood connections...if this is the case then you need to connect directly to the battery in trunk for full power charge...again POS to POS, and NEG to NEG...hope this helps

Took battery out of my 1993 buick riviera, put back in now starts then dies

how did you disconnect the battery, pos first then neg ? or neg first then pos ? try starting it and after started, hold your rpm at 1500, for about two minutes, then if still running, drive it to get to.speeds of 40 for about 15 minutes, this is to relearn if not, disconnect your battery, take the pos and neg cable and touch them together and hold for about a minute, then Connect them back, neg.first.then pos, then follow steps above to.relearn.

How to jump a BMW 320

All vehicles with a 12 Volt Positive system are jump started in the same manner.

If done properly, you should always connect the +Pos side on the battery in the vehicle that should be running, then connect that same cable to the +Pos side on the low battery. Then, you connect the
-Neg side on the running vehicle, and now connect the other -Neg end to a solid ground on the vehicle with the low battery. You really want a good connection for this on a solid part of the engine/trans., since when you attempt to start the car, it will be drawing 400-700 Amps.
(Alternator bracket, exhaust manifold, a sling point, etc. wil do.)

Some people hook to the -Neg side of the low battery, but that can cause sparks as well as an explosion if hydrocarbons are coming out of the low battery.

A completely fried battery can cause the vehicle providing the jump start to stall and can even damage components if not connected properly.

Good luck!

Left the lights on .. how to jump the battery in a 2005 Passat wagon.

It jumps like any other car. Pos. good battery...Pos. bad battery...Neg. bad battery...Neg. good battery. Then do reverse after it starts. Let old battery charge from new battery with car running if it needs more power to crank over.

When I went to go start the car it just would not start at all, thought it might be battery, but then lights turned on for a bit and went back off and still will not tunr over or start?

it could still be the battery. if the amperage is low it will cause this condition. please try jumping your car properly. pos to pos - neg to neg have the other car running and let it set for a min then try to start your car.
