Question about 2004 Ford Ranger

Intermitent wiper motor freezes

High & low works. Delay freezes. Not sure if it's the motor or the interval switch. where is the interval switch and where is the multi function switch on these trucks and what should I check ?

If works on all settings except this one it would be the switch there would be a short

The generic electronic module (GEM) responds to the windshield wiper control commands by interpreting inputs from the steering column multi-function switch. The speed dependent wipers will compensate for the extra moisture that accumulates on the windshield at higher speeds, except when the multi-function switch is in the INT 1 position. At higher speeds, the speed dependent feature shortens the delay between wipes when using the variable interval wipers. Delays will automatically adjust at speeds between 16 and 105 km/h (10 and 65 mph).
Testing should be done before replacing any parts . And if you don't know about (GEM) Control module controlled system's your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop . The first place to start trouble shooting these systems is with a scan tool that can read GEM module codes .

Wiper issues only work on high but work very slow

with engine running and not.?
front or rear wiper,?????
toss dice, land on front......( 50/50 odds)
it's a network now, no more old style, point to point one wire for every thing on car and a ton of copper to match.
first test all fuses, then scan it.
or it will get expensive fast guessing.
the Switch bank brain under the wiper stalk
sends what you did, on to the LIN bus network,
The switch there does not actually drive lamps.
its just a digital switch, (some are 3 level logic)
The switches on some use a bank of internal resistors to tell the switch bank what you did.

this LIN data stream, is sent to the cluster brain
and also to the TIPM brain.(Allen Turing brains)
the cluster responds for many actions, taken and shows you what you did (EG) for blinkers, flashes the cluster TURN lamp. in same.

the command for wipers are sent to the TIPM
this device, runs (DRIVES) a huge number of things on the car. (ask for schematics, I have it in pdf forum now,)

It drives the wiper motor using internal high powered electronics. Direct drive,..
It also senses the wipers location called the sense wire.
The TIPM brain, has complex logic to do all that
it gets many commands to do, (fast ,slow, intermittent wipe) and via TIPM computer memory instructions,
does the job.with pure software. inside.
the wipers can fail for many reasons besides simple mechanical jam or a cut wire.
1: fuse blown to any of those module. check them all if you are SAVVY!
2: TIPM bad,
3: TIPM power supply pin too low, say car battery is 10v ( are head lamps dim,, hummmmmmmmmm)
4: TIPM programming bad. (scrambled brain, needs re-flash)
5: CAN bus or LIN bus, noise, or gross collisions of data on that vital bus. (only scans work here)

IF all fuses are good we scan it .
as always , we check battery voltage first.
with out fail, and listening to the starter motor.
if the starter is dead or weak , we want a strong battery to make all this complex electronics in the car work.
A $10 voltmeter and you know know, battery is above 12.6vdc rested, key on, engine off.
start engine and it goes above, 13.3vdc.
That same tool i can test all fuse. ask.

what is missing is a block diagram, here ill make one so we can all learn....

Binary switch stalk. via 7 pin connector.
SCM module (steering control module)
to: (i guess the SCM is the Bank switch brain)
the LIN>CAN network, (the SCM sends digital commands to)

if you scan it and see errors from SCM to TIPM
that needs to be corrected first.
garbled bus data will make the TIPM go nuts.

That ground bad theory fails. because...
the motor uses Ground G112
if that wire fails you get vast numbers of failure from 10 majors. including oxygen sensor 1/2
so it;'s not G112 bad.
the motor has fast winding and low speed.
and a common ground. and a sense wire.

never skip scanning the car, or its all like a dog chasing his tail.
Battery not discharged, (you never said car runs)
fuses all good, (means tested)
scanned and not DTC errors. (i bet yes errors)
there 7 pages for the whole can/lin bus.

but this one is switch banks.
one tricky aspect of this, is the cluster
I think translates this wiper data commands from the LIN bus and then rebroadcasts to to the CAN-BUS. that he TIPM uses.that means.
so error are both buses are important.
this is the LIN-bus, the cluster retransmites the commands do the CAN-BUS. so if cluster is dead
that kills those commands,... out.bound. see?

Are u assuming the GEM module is at fault ? Did you or your local auto electrician check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes?

Did you an your auto electrican check power an grounds for the GEM ? Voltage drop testing ? . Did you check power an ground circuits for the affected systems . Working when they want sounds more like a loose connection somewhere .

Wipers would not park, customer forced down wiper arm and broke off arm. Now no electric to wipers.

Before 1995 Ford interval wiper systems mainly consisted of a switch, the motor and the interval governor (also called the wiper control module or 'WCM'). The basic wiper systems just parked the wipers at the end of their travel at the base of the windshield and involved just one park switch.

The more complex systems not only stopped the wipers at the base of the windshield, but would actually recess them below the windshield to park them. This involved using two park switches to turn the wiper motor in a reverse direction. These were installed on the Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Town Car, Taurus and Sable.

The wiper switch (named 'Multi-Function Switch' on most models) had a common return or ground circuit and two input or signal circuits to the WCM. Basically, the switch was two modified potentiometers that varied the resistance to ground for the two signal circuits. When the wiper switch was placed in the low or high position, the WCM looked at only one of the circuits- the 'mode input' -and controlled the wiper motor accordingly. If the wiper switch was placed in any of the interval positions, the mode input told the WCM that the switch was in an interval position. The WCM then looked at the second input - the 'delay input' - and used it to determine the amount of delay between wipes.

1) To run the wipers on low or high speed, the WCM provided constant power to the wiper motor on the proper circuit to provide the requested speed. Dual park switch motors
1.1 The first park switch operated basically in the same way as the single switch systems.
1.2 The second park switch worked in the opposite manner- when the wipers were off the park position, the second switch provided a ground for the wiper motor. Power and ground were now provided by the park switches.
1.3 When the wipers needed to park, the polarity of the switches changed, and thus provided reversed voltage to drive the motor in the opposite direction.

2) To run the interval wipers, the WCM applied voltage to the wiper motor only momentarily to get the wipers off the parked position.
3) The electro-mechanical park switch made a circuit between the power feed in and the output to the WCM. Power was provided from the park switch through the WCM and back to the wiper motor.
4) When the wipers reached the park position, the park switch made a circuit between the ground and the output to the WCM, and the motor stopped running. The wiper motor and the wiper switch have remained much the same as the single park switch motors of the past.

The main difference is that the switch has become an input to the GEM instead of the WCM.
1) When the wiper switch is placed in the low or high position, the Run-Park relay is grounded by the GEM to provide constant voltage to the High-Low relay, which then provides voltage to the proper circuit of the wiper motor.
2) High-Low relay is in the low speed position unless grounded by the GEM.
3) The park switch not only feeds the Run-Park relay but is now also an input to the GEM. This tells the GEM when the wipers are in the parked position so it can de-energize the Run-Park relay.
4) When any of the interval positions are selected, the Run-Park relay is momentarily grounded to get the wipers off the parked position
5) The park switch then provides voltage to the other set of contacts in the Run-Park relay.
6) When the GEM de-energizes the Run- Park relay, voltage is still provided from the park switch to the High-Low relay and the wipers complete the stroke.
