Many GM cars have a TIMING SENSOR under the pully, if you DID'T remove the sensor FIRST you May have damaged it or dis lodge it from it grooves. Look into this sensor idea, before spending too much $$$.

I have a 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette and the belt that goes around the motor keeps messing up. The inner part of the belt starts coming apart. We have replaced the pulley and are on the 4th belt now. The...

Can be a sign of a mis-aligned pulley. If a pulley is not perfectly flush with other pulleys, or skewed ( cocked a bit) it will tear up your belts. This is usually caused by worn out bolt holes retaining the component or its bracket, or a worn out component causing the pulley to wobble. With the belt off, Visually check pully alignment and skew with a straight edge. Using your hands, try to make eack pulley wobble by pulling back and forth on it to feel for play in the pulley bearing. No play is acceptable for and component pulley other than very slight play in tensioner pully. Ive seen A/C compressor and alternator pulley do that type of belt damage. Mike

Need to replace a pulley on a 2001 silhouette. don't know which onw though

The pulley youll need to replace is called a pulley tensioner,it comes with a automatic tensioner and a pulley all in one unit, when this tensioner wears the drive belt can no longer maintain a correct tension, when tensions are loose a belt noise develops as high RPM are achieved you develop a squeeling noise even at start up. Failure to replace a worn tension developts a glaze on the drive belt thus wearing it out quicker,by all practical means if you reuse the same belt the rotation must be followed, drive belt being rubber in nature developts conicity and fail if rotation is not maintain,so it always a good idea to replace the drive belt when you replace the pulley tensioner

I replaced both the belt and the tensioner, the van ran fine for 2 days and now the belt keeps slipping - any ideas?

One of the pulleys or idlers is bad now that you have a new belt. Take off belt and check them .

What would cause the belt to shred

A locked pulley. Check to make sure they all turn free before you replace the belt.

When I raise the hood and with motor running looking to my left there is a belt running and a squeaking noise at idle coming from that area. The van is front wheel drive so motor sits in there sideways.

Has it just started with cold weather? Does it squeal at first then as the engine is revved, stop squealing.

If so its probably your alternator belt has worked loose and needs tightening. I'd check this out first, if you've not done it before ask a friend with some know how for guidance. But as a guide, there should be about an inch of give when flexed on the longest run between 2 pulleys, if more then probably needs tightening. If more than a couple of years old, replace with a new one.

If it still squeals after tightening/replacing, you could have a faulty water pump bearing or pulley bearing. Either would require replacement to pre-empt catastrophic failure and resultant engine damage.
