Question about 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

2 Answers

My oil pressure gauge (on the top right of the dashboard) randomly shows the oil pressure going down to zero (check gauge light comes on) and then randomly goes back into the normal range. It happens mainly when I start the vehicle and drive a while. It seems to lessen as longer drives occur. I believe it is a gauge problem on the dash because of this; 1.) I replaced the oil sending unit 2.) I have driven the Jeep with a manual gauge attached and it showed perfect pressure (75-100 lbs of pressure) 3.) I did an oil change...and then 2 weeks later did an actual oil flush (with the proper flush product) and then did another oil change with filter...no oil sludge or ANY indication of scaling whatsoever. So...is there something I am missing BEFORE I pull out the dash and see if the gauge has corrosion or other electrical issue...I can buy a dash unit online (used). The dealer wants $750 for the dash unit new! Please help. I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with the 8-cylinder 4,7 liter engine 4 wheel drive.

Does the wiring harness have a grounding issue or simply faulty? What are general costs with that? I am ignorant of those types of fixes. Is it a long repair at the dealership?

Did you compare what your dash gauge read when it was acting up and compare it to the manual gauge at the same time? I know you said you used the manual gauge and it read fine so if you get a proper reading out of the manual gauge and an improper reading out of the dash gauge then your dash gauge needs addressed.

Oil pressure gauge goes to zero and check engine light comes on but oil pressure is fine

If the oil pressure switch shows zero, how do you know its fine? If the oil level is correct in the engine, it may be a faulty wire / connection or it could be that the oil pump is failing

Oil pressure guage not registering

The oil pressure gauge on a 2004 WJ doesn t really show the pressure, but it will go to a preset value when pressure is ok, or it will stay at o PSI. So you need a pressure switch on this jeep and not a pressure sending unit. If the right unit is installed, then or the pressure indicator is faulty, or wiring. Do a test of the instrument panel to see if the indicator works: ignition switch in off, press the odometer reset button and now switch ignition in run. Instrument panel will start a self test, all lights will come on and all meters will go full scale and return to normal.

My check gauges light is on, oil hands goes over to zero, moves up, light goes off, when it drops back to zero, gauge light comes back on.

Well the warning light is supposed to come on if any of the gauges display a dangerous condition, such as no oil pressure.
You may have a faulty sending unit for the gauge, or a wiring problem, or the engine may actually be loosing oil pressure when the gauge drops.
You could replace the sending unit as a test, or have someone check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.

check it out manually with a pressure gauge ,could just be a high resistance or something ,but check with a manual dial gauge and if low check put the oil pump

Gauges work fine when engine's started, then oil gauge falls below zero and warning light comes on saying "Check gauges," so I check the oil and transmission fluid levels and these are fine but...

start by checking the ground strap to the engine, and engine to body. The oil pressure sender unit may be bad. You may have to hook up an oil pressure gauge to the oil pressure sender port to verify proper oil pressure. Senders are cheap- I would just replace it and go from there.

My 2001 Chevy Suburban is making a loud ticking noise intermittently, it mostly happens at stop lights, but most especially when I start it in the morning. The oil pressure light and gauge show low to zero...

If the oil light and the gauge is showing low to zero pressure then you need to have the pressure checked by someone with a mechanical gauge to varify the pressure is low. Is the oil level at the full mark? I have seen where the oil pickup tube o ring gets hard over time and cracks which can allow the oil pump to draw in air and cause low oil pressure. If you run the engine with very low oil pressure for any length of time there is a chance that the engine may need to be replaced due to lack of lubrication. The chevrolet dealerships still provide very good service. Hope this helps.

If the valve lifters are quiet you most likely have oil pressure even with gauge showing "0".Sounds like the oil pressure switch going bad.I would try that first.

My jeep also has started doing this. I replaced the oil pressure sensor. Sensor on the 4.7 is above the oil filter, follow the wires, typicaly is a 1 1/16 socket.

Oil pressure gauge goes up when car started, but then down to 0

u Have a problem with the oil sending unit. The sensor is located beack right side of the engine block. Take out the switch and make sure u have good oil PSI. Should be 6 psi at idle and around 50 at 4000 RPM. If the presure is ok replace the switch they are very cheap about 20 bucks. Please rate.
