These have a nylon drive gear in the transmission you need to pull that out and look at the drive gear also look in the trans. and see if the main shaft drive gear is loose on the shaft if the speedo cable is old it may be binding it snakes through the body and has alot of bends

As i dont have the chassis number i simply dont know, but i will go for a sensor type.On the auto/box side of the engine you must take a good look and you will find a push in plug with two wires on a connection remove an clean ,this is a photocell and needs cleaning ie the part pointing into the engine.if you cant find anything like this then you are looking for a speedo cable from the back of the dash to the gearbox, its a pretty heavy cable, good luck.adrian.

My speedometer stopped working on my ford f-150 pickup 1998 super cab

Its like ly that the speedometer cracked inside the transmission. It is make of plastic and is easy to replace costs like 2 dollars and the disgin has not changed in 30 years but it will be a color so take it with you to the dealer . there are olny 4 differant ones and its the # of teeth on the gear . Follow the cable down to the transmission remove the small bolt at the speed sensor you should also replace the O ring on the sensor . Olny takes 10 minutes to replace

F150 Speedometer issue

This is your speed sensor. Now i do not know if this is going to be cable driven or electrical because they used both in 95. Your local auto parts store will tell you exactly what kind is in your truck. I just changed one friday on a 94 ford escort and it was electrical. The part was around 20 dollars for the speed sensor.

Speedometer bounces while driving

your spedo cable is probably just loose which can be fixed by tightening or replaceing. Might as well go ahead and replace it since its a 14 year old truck and its the more sure fire way to fix the bounce.
