How install new timing chain 4.0 ford explorer

There are two versions of the 4 liter, first design is a push rod engine, pretty straight forward v engine, one chain from crank to cam located behind timing chain cover. The second 4 liter is a SOHC engine which has several chains and the right bank cam chain is at the rear of engine requiring engine removal, not a job for the faint of heart.Best place to start would be to buy the Haynes repair manual and read the timing chain remove and replace chapter then decide if you are interested in the task.

stop by local parts store (Autozone,Advance, etc) and have them do a free fault code test. They can print out a list of faults and clear the codes

Wheni Start up it idles high an taps mostly in the morning and it stops when it warms up wats wrong 1998 Ford Explorer 2wd 4.0 Auto 4dr

If it is the SOHC engine, then your timing chain guides are ready to fail. Even though it is a 98, you may still get them replaced under the recall by Ford. Otherwise, they need to be replaced before they fail completely, as it will go from a $600 job to a $2500 job. The valvetrain will be destroyed if they fail.

This is a common problem with the 4.0 SOHC engine.
