This is most likely caused by a vacuum leak in the system. When vacuum is lost it will default to defrost as a safety precaution. You will need to locate where the leak is and either repair or replace the line.

Why wont my ac or heater come on in my 2003 chevy impala, but the defroster it work on defrost only when i turn it to the heat position, but not on ac mode.

Check the actuator motor on the heater. It moves the arms that directs the doors to switch from heat to ac. and to defrosters.

Had no heat at all in my 06 equinox tried everything to fix and no luck. Until I noticed AC pump was turning on and off unplugged it and now have heat. What would cause AC to do that?

The A/C compressor will cycle if the climate controls are set to send air to the defroster vents, or if the controls are set to an A/C position. Running when on defrost prevents fogging. What is most likely your issue is that the blend door in the heater box is not shifting over completely to the heater core, thus you are getting the colder A/C air rather than the heated air. You could also have a kinked heater hose or partially clogged heater core.

I'm getting an intermittent loud flapping sound when the AC is turned on my 2009 Smart ForTwo

Question. Is the flapping at a very fast pace that would indicate the speed of a fan blade hitting something? If so, you may be on to something there such as a misplaced gasket or something has dropped/fallen into the blower box via a vent.

If it is not that speed then see the following..

Hope I can give you some direction. Speaking from a generic sense all ac/heaters these days have a door or doors in the blower box that control air flow from the main part of the box to different positions when you ask for vent, heater, mix, defrost etc..

Most these days are operated with a small electric servo/motor and unfortunately the mostly have plastic gears that wear and can "thump-thump" as the motor cycles trying to open or close the flapper door.

Try to change the air direction from Max AC to regular ac to heater, defroster, bi-level etc all with the AC switch in the on position if you have a separate on/off switch.

Listen to the sound and see if it comes and goes with a different location of the selector switch.

One last question. Does it happen at idle or driving down the road at any particular speed?

Lets start with that and see what happens. This is interesting.

Good luck!

2012 jeep liberty heater

If you find that the heater control is a problem then until you get an answer, try running the ac unit as well. It will dehumidify the cab air ( no fogging windscreen ) keep the cab at a reasonable temperature . In most cars it is referred to as climate control . Control is by the heater knob as to how hot you allow the heater to get

Ac light turns on when switch is on defrost position but ac switch is off

The defrost feature in most later vehicles utilizes the AC to speed the drying of the windshield inside. It is the mfr's choice as to whether to let you know that this is happening. ACs cool by extracting moisture from the air . . . or the inside of your windshield. BTW, in the defrost mode, you can use the heater while the AC is running this warms the air that the AC is drying- it works fine. Using the AC does increase fuel usage so some makers might not want you to know that it is operating while in the defrost mode.

A/c -heat only comes out the defrost opening no matter what position the vent selector is in -should i change the heater control switch

No the switch is probably ok. The problem is most likely the door actuator motor. It is a small electric motor that opens and close the the correct door to direct the air in the ac/heating ducts. These motors take place of the old cables that did the same job.

Check the vacuum hose going to the heater control valve,it may have popped off. If that is on. check the vacuum hose going to your recirculation door under the right side of your dash. I hope this helps.
