Temp gauge reads overheating but coolant is not hot and the overflow spills oven during ecceleration also the coolant isn't circulating

Hi, it is likely your thermostat has failed closed. Replace thermostat.

How to fix the heat to work all the time when not moving


This can happen if your water pump is failing. You will get the most heat when your water pump is forcing the fluids to circulate within the engine block.

My 2006 Caravan temperature gauge goes to red - engine is not overheating. Kick it into a lower gear (automatic trans) and the gauge comes back down. Is it likely the coolant sensor?


Could be.. is the system FULL? Air in it can cause some odd things. When engine and coolant are COLD (as in after sitting over night), open the radiator cap. Top off the overflow res with a 50/50 antifreeze / water mixture to HOT mark. Start engine, turn heat to hot and fan to high. Top off RADIATOR with same 50/50 mixture slowly & gradually. As the coolant circulates, it should bring any AIR trapped in the system (from heater core & engine block) to the radiator where you can replace it with the 50/50 mix. Once the coolant is HOT and stays level - about an inch under the opening, close the radiator. Monitor the overflow res and add as needed. Good luck!

Well, I would say that the radiator would be next on your list, but usually the overflow is attached to the radiator, so that should be impossible to boil before radiator. How does the temperature gauge look? Even if any parts are hot to the touch that doesn't necessarily mean they are overheated. It may be that the system is still working out bubbles, hence the overflow boiling over.

If your coolant overflow is bubbling then regardless of what your gauge says you are having overheating issues. If your coolant is missing with no aparent leaks then you need to check your oil for a milky consistency and apearance which would most likely point to a blown head gasket. This would also explain overheating. Hope this helps

2005 impala temp gauge not working light says overheating replaced thermostat temp sensor and bleed system. Any thoughts


Remove the radiator cap, let the car run. When the car is at temp. and the thermostat opens you should see coolant circulating in the radiator. If there is coolant flow and you know for a fact that the engine is not actually hot,(check with a laser thermometer: point the laser at the engine block and read temp.) then you more than likely have a problem with the coolant temp. sensor. Check the connections, replace the sensor.
If you do not see coolant circulating in the radiator then you have an issue with either a thermostat, water pump or possibly a blockage or at worst a problem in the head. Check the overflow with the car running, if it is steadily "blowing bubbles" in the over flow (like someone blowing bubbles into a cup with a straw) then there is compression leaking into the cooling system and there is a problem with the heads. Remove the heads and have them checked for cracks at a machine shop.
If there is no "blowing bubbles" then I would remove the thermostat, run and check for circulation in the radiator again. If it is flowing, then replace the thermostat. No flow, Check the radiator with a laser thermometer. With the car at temp. point the laser at different areas of the radiator and see if you have "cold" spots. If you do then you have blockage at the radiator. If you have consistent readings across the radiator that is not "cold" then change your water pump.

Overheating


it could very well be a bad gauge. when it shows the engine to be overheated or at the least very hot, check the actual temp at the water outlet where the upper radiator hose attaches to the engine. use a non contact thermometer to check the temp so as not to get burned in the process. if the thermometer reads way different than the gauge, the gauge is bad.

I think you correct in thinking the sending unit is bad, this is a common problem. if the temp gauge reads hot and the engine is running normal and there is no coolant overflowing onto the ground and the radidator is full then i would have to say that the car is not really overheating but rather the sending unit is bad, i would replace the unit and go from there. these trucks run up to above the three quater mark on the gauge at times before the cooling fans are turned on by the computer. hope this is helpful.

Temperature gauge goes in the red. i replaced thermostat. engine does not appear to be hot. could it be an electrical wire causing the gauge to go into the red.


You most likely have a blocked radiator based on the vehicle's age, which will not allow all the coolant in your cooling system to circulate enough to cool the engine. The fans that blow on the radiator won't help much when this happens and at a stop the motor will get hot and the gauge will go in the red because the vehicle really is getting too hot. Just because you don't see steam erupting from the engine compartment does not mean the vehicle is not overheating. It is not very likely electrical short or related issue would make the gauge read high.
