  • sswindler Mar 20, 2011

CAR STARTED JUST FINE THIS MORNING BUT IS CURRENTLY SITTING IN CHURCH PARKING LOT AS WAS TOTALLY OFF WHEN I WENT OUT AFTER CHURCH. HAD FRIEND TAKE ME HOME AND BACK TO CAR AFTER I READ YOUR ANSWER BUT CAR STILL NO START. DO I NEED TO WORRY ABOUT BATTERY GOING DOWN WHEN I HAVE TO LEAVE KEY IN RUN (RADIO, LIGHTS, ETC. DO GO ON)? I WILL LET IT SIT FOR AN HOUR MORE AND TRY AGAIN. ANY MORE SUGGESTIONS?

OH I TOOK TO DEALERSHIP 2 WEEKS AGO AND THEY SAID IGINITION AND ALL TESTED FINE AND OF COURSE CAR DID NOT ACT UP WHEN THEY HAD IT!!!

  • sswindler Mar 23, 2011

received other solution of sitting with key in on position for 10 minutes and then car would start.....did not happen. left car to sit for hours then started and worked fine for 2 days however went to go to work this morning and again car silent, no start from theft anti ignition. have taken it in and was told that anti theft could not be disabled and there was "something" going on but mechanic not sure what! where is this anti theft switch and how do I disable it? I cannot keep living like this, not knowing if car will start or not. (also have "shut off" each time I fill with gas and have to sit at gas station for hour or so till it will start again.)

Sounds like your alarm is malfunctioning. Disable the alarm by disconnecting the power wire for it until you can replace it. It is possible that it may be a faulty Starter Kill switch but most likely it is the alarm unit.

Ok, that tells me you bought the car with the alarm installed by the factory. If that is the case you can only replace that by replacing the ECM module because that is what controls it. It it is an Alarm that was installed after the car was purchased, locate the power wire for the Alarm module and but it. That will disable the starter kill switch.

TRY THIS PROCEDURE IT WILL GET YOU HOME.PUT KEY IN THE IGNITION SWITCH.TURN KEY TO THE ON POSITION FOR 10 MINUTES.WATCH SECURITY LAMP.WHEN SECURITY LIGHT DISAPPEAR.TURN OFF IGNITION SWITCH FOR 5 SECONDS.THEN TRY STARTING CAR.TAKE CAR TO DEALERSHIP.YOU HAVE PROBLEM IN THE SENTRY KEY IMMOBILIZER MODULE.OR KEY IS WORN AND THE IGNITION SWITCH COULD ALSO BE WORN OUT.

YOU DONT LEAVE THE IGNITION SWITCH ON MORE THAN 10 MINUTES AT A TIME.IF THIS PROCEDURE DID NOT WORK.CHECK FOR FAULTY STARTER RELAY,FAULTY STARTER OR STARTER SOLENOID,COULD HAVE BAD BATTERY GROUND CABLE.IF ALL IS GOOD. CODE SCAN CAR FOR THEFT SECURITY CODES.YOU COULD HAVE FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH.MANY THINGS WILL PREVENT CAR FROM CRANKING.

Sound like a bad ignition switch; its possible that you need ti replace it. Try to visit you Service Manager and ask about this information, just that they could run the codes and confirm to replace a faulty ignition switch.

I remember long time ago that explained me that some of the tumblers in the switch were not falling when the switch was engaged, therefore the car wouldn't start.

Hope helps.

A 'bypass module' is for bypassing (temporarily)
those vehicles having sophisticated anti-theft systems, not the alarms
that sound a siren or blows the horn, but anti-theft systems that came
from the vehicle manufacturer as standard protection and built-in to the
electronic fuel injection system, programmed into another computer
subsystem. Some vehicles have more than one subsystem computer like the
body control module (BCM) and this becomes part of GM's Passlock
anti-theft system that can disable the engine from running. This
anti-theft system is a very well engineered and fully integrated
anti-theft system that does not tolerate any after market alarm
installation unless these alarm/remote start systems are designed to
operate with Saturn's anti-theft systems. In order to work with
the OEM/factory system the bypass module (not an OEM module) is bought
and installed separately to facilitate seamless operation of aftermarket
    systems with Passlock's system.

The bypass module is only used when
there's an anti-theft system in your car. Do you have this anti-theft
system? Its either in your owner's manual or research here, possibly
from other '99 owners. You either have Passlock which requires a bypass
module or you don't have Passlock which doesn't require a bypass module.
Simple if you're aware of these facts. Better do your homework and
possibly find another shop for a better professional installer that does
    their own research.

No vehicle has any bypass module as this is strictly for aftermarket
use, making your 'professional' installer wrong. He/she should know
this. To have a feel for what you're getting, try Googling 'bypass
modules' and see what they cost... the more you
    know.

My 1991 780 Bertone Coupe has not been starting when left on the parking lot in the sun. I've replaced 2 starters this summer but it still keeps happening. My mechanic is stumped. The only comm

If the car is in a secure area, raise the hood to vent air from the engine compartment when you park.

The symptoms sound like Vapor lock or a bad coil. Check fuelpump pressure when it acts up again.

If this vehicle has an ignition Relay, or a Fuelpump Relay, they may be affected by heat. Replace those Relays.

I am thinking the starters failed because of extreme cranking usage. Next time you replace one, get a Lifetime gaurantee.

There can be a strenuous condition for a starter when the engine is overadvanced. GM had a problem with its Crankshaft sensors which kept the Cams overadvanced and it fried the starters when the Owners tried to start their motors. But this was not due to heat and occured on cold motors too.

I hope my solution is helpful. Please rate my solution.

This is the anti-theft PASSLOCK system. You can purchase a paslock 2 bypass system that will bypass the anti-theft othewise you will have to wait the 10 minutes with the key on the ON position and turn over immediately when anti-theft light turns off

Car starts and dies in 3 seconds

Try unhooking the battery for about 3-5minutes. I have a 2001 malibu that does the same thing. When you hook up the battery and turn the key forward you should see the gauges return to normal before you try to crank the engine. It may also be the theft system. To reset that you have to turn the key forward for 10 minutes and then shut it off for 10 seconds. Then try again to start the car. It may take up to 3 attempts at this. Which means sitting in the parking lot for over a half hour. Been there done that. GM sucks.

Car starts but turns off after a 10 min or so.

This definitely sounds like a fuel pump/filter issue. Good news if it's the filter, it's only about 10 dollars to buy a new one and about 5 minutes labor, including jacking up your car.

Fuel pumps cant be a pain in the arse at times, others are fairly easy. Best way to determine if it's the fuel pump, run over to Canadian tire and pick up an ohms meter. Test the fuel pump that way.
