Question about 1998 Mazda B-Series

Mazda Pedal adjustment

Looks like this one attaches in one place and has a plastic rod that rides driectly on a metal rod coming out of the master cylinder. Looks like they did away with any adjustment nuts? The pedal seems like it's actifating the master cylinder except for at the very beginning of travel. But I can't see any way to change that or am not sure that it is wrong as it is.

    Yes I bleed it all the time. That gets it going again. I haven't had to bleed it for a while, but noticed that the last time it quit working I had a tough time getting the master cyl reservior cap off. I took it off today and again it was tight, almost like a vacuum? Or is it my imagination?

    Often when it quits working I bleed it along the roadside by myself and use a hose etc. I usually can't even see air come out, but it always starts working after this bleeding. The inside of hte tranny looks dry too, I checked inside the inspection cap. Just can't seem to figure out what's causing it!

    Yep, i thas the correct cap with boot. I never saw a vent hole in the cap, maybe it's plugged? The boot is there and looks fine.

Have you checked if there if air in clutch system?
Try bleeding slave cylinder..
a) Have someone hold down clutch pedal, then slowly loosen bleed screw on slave till some fluid escapes, noting if any air bubbles come out.
Repeat a) Until fluid is clear. (Keep an eye on master cylinder level)

    Does it look like the correct cap?
    It should have a rubber boot inside and the cap has a vent hole to allow fluid to drop into cylinder.

Where is the Clutch Adjustment located on a 1996 Toyota Tacoma?

The adjustment is in the clutch slave push rod and master( where the pedal push rod attaches the master cylinder ) if it uses a hydraulic type.
If it is cable type, the adjustment is on the cable front of the firewall, where the cable comes out from bulkhead.

Replacing brake booster in 2001 escape the push rod in the new booster appears to be too short are they adjustable?

Not that I am aware of. My book on the 2001-2007 Escape does not indicate any adjustment in that push rod. double check the part number against the part number that should be installed by calling another parts store and asking if they have the part and then compare the number they give you with the number you have. Make sure the brands are the same. The problem you may have is that a lot of stores assume that all parts in these year models are interchangeable between the Escape and Mazda Tribute. In fact many are since both vehicle were built in the same factory with very few differences. In fact the repair manuals usually list both vehicles in the same book.

How to adjust the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder locknut that is under the dashboard

the slave cylinder is bolted to the bell housing, its motion moves the throw out bearing. the master cylinder is connected to the clutch pedal. the adjustment will only take any slack out of the rod which is moved by the clutch pedal up against the piston of the master cylinder. it only needs adjustment if the clutch pedal has any slop in it.

How do you disconnect the brakebooster rod from the brake pedal on a 1998 4x4 z71chevy truck? how do you take the plastic conector off?? pics would help

  1. Remove the master cylinder from the brake booster. Use line wrenches and remove the brake lines on the master cylinder. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the nuts holding the master cylinder to the brake booster and remove the master cylinder. Lay it down with the line holes up to prevent leakage. The brake activator rod must be removed next---this is attached to the top of the brake pedal arm.
  2. There are two types of brake light switches. One is mounted remotely and has a button that is depressed by the brake pedal when it is released that creates an open circuit and turns the lights off. When the brake pedal is depressed, the button is released and allowed to extend, creating a completed circuit and turning the brake lights on. These are adjustable. All that needs to be done to adjust these switches is to adjust them where they are making contact with the arm of the brake pedal when the pedal is released. The second type is a switch that is directly attached to the brake pedal where the activator rod and pedal arm are attached with a through pin.
  3. Remove the bottom portion of the driver's side dash to gain access to the activator rod. Remove the clip or spring lock from the side of the pin holding the activator rod to the brake pedal. Disconnect the electrical connector to the brake light switch. Rotate the switch upward and dislodge the brake activator rod from the brake pedal arm. Remove the electrical switch. Using a long 3/8-inch drive extension with a swivel and a 15 mm socket, remove the four nuts under the dash on the firewall holding the brake booster to the firewall. Unplug the vacuum line to the booster and remove the vacuum booster from the firewall.
  4. Install the new booster, keeping the brake activator rod on the inboard side of the brake pedal arm. Go under the dash and install the nuts retaining the booster to the firewall and tighten. Install the brake switch over the brake pedal. Hold the electrical end up while the activator rod is pulled and inserted over the retaining pin on the brake pedal arm.
  5. Install the retaining clip on the retaining spring and connect the electrical connector to the switch. Install the lower dash panel. Install the vacuum hose to the brake booster. Install the master cylinder and tighten the nuts. Install the brake lines to the master cylinder and attach the electrical connector. Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder and fill as necessary.
  6. Have someone sit in the car while you loosen the front brake line on the master cylinder. Have the person helping push the brake pedal to the floor and hold it there. Once the pedal is to the floor, tighten the brake line and repeat the procedure for the rear line. Recheck the level in the master cylinder and fill with brake fluid as needed.

My clutch was wokin good and then all of a suddent there was no pressure on my clutch so i checked and it had to dot 3 fluid in it so i put sum in but it leaked it out rite away it came out on driverside...

It sounds like the rubber seal on the Clutch Slave Cylinder piston has completely failed. You will need to replace the Slave Cylinder Assembly. To replace, undo the union nut that attaches the pipe from the master cylinder and then undo the bolts that attach the assembly to the engine/transmission. Remove the push rod from the old cylinder and place in the new. Reattach Cylinder Assembly and pipe, making sure push rod engages in socket of clutch operating fork. Bleeding the system is as follows.

1. Start with the Master Cylinder full of fluid. (Don't forget to check after a few bleeds that it stays above ¼ full so that you don't introduce more air into the line). It also helps if you have a length of clear plastic tubing that fits snugly over the tip of the bleed nipple, which makes it easier to see if there are any air bubbles still coming out.

2. Have an assistant pump the clutch pedal 2 or 3 times, then hold down, keeping weight on the pedal as fluid is released.

3. Loosen bleed nipple to release any air & fluid.

4. Tighten nipple. Assistant then lets clutch pedal return. It may be necessary to manually pull back pedal if it does not return by itself.

5. Wait a few seconds then repeat the sequence from #2.

Bleeding is complete when no more air bubbles are visible in the fluid released from the bleed nipple. If clutch is still spongy you may have to repeat the bleeding after a few days driving. If the Slave cylinder does not have a bleed nipple the union nut that attaches the fluid pipe can be used for bleeding. However, it is a bit harder to observe when all air is purged and of course very messy as fluid will drip everywhere.

It also pays to check that the clutch pedal free travel is within specification (about ¼ inch measured at the pedal rubber) to ensure the hydraulic system works properly. This is done by adjusting the push rod that links the pedal arm to the piston in the master cylinder. Adjust by first loosening the locknut on the rod at the end where it attaches to the pedal arm and turning the rod in either direction to obtain the correct free travel. One adjusted retighten locknut.

How do you adjust the clutch on a 2000 ford focus zx3? does it have a slave cylinder?.... i pushed in the clutch to downshift and clutch stayed down when i let it go. i pulled it back with my hand and...

The only adjustment is for the pedal itself. There is a master cylinder at the top of the pedal that makes the pressure which travels thru the metal line to a rubber hose to a metal line which goes to the slave cylinder which is what actually pushes the clutch rod in the transmission. Sounds to me like your problem is in the Master cylinder part. It is like the brake master cylinder, there is a rod with rubber cups on it, and it sounds like the edges of the cup folded over backwards and hung up inside the cylinder, when you forced the pedal back up they folded back the right way, and now they are **** up a little making them not want to push as easy. This problem will happen again, so You better start pricing a new clutch master cylinder. From what I saw while researching this It looks like you can buy the master and slave cylinder as a set. If any pieces of the master cylinder rubber cups came off during this they may work their way thru the system to the slave cylinder and cause problems there as well. The reason behind thinking its the master and not the slave is, if it were the slave that hung up the pedal would have come back up since it has a spring on it.

There is a metal rod attached to the clutch pedal but came out of the sleeve it was in will this be a problem to fix

this metal rod is the cluch master cylinder push rod
its held into the master cylinder by a spring clip if you can get at the master cylinder from inside the car you could just clip the clip it back in to its cut out and the jobs done, but i gess you may not be able to reach it so you may need to take out the master cylinder and take the pin out the cluck pedal so you can remove the push rod and fit it back into the master cylinder that way,, you will need to blead the cluch after refitting the master cylinder

you have a clutch hydraulic problem. have the clutch master cylinder replaced and the linkage adjusted if neccessary. you will be money ahead to have them replace the slave cylinder at the same time.

Clutch goes to floor can't shift gears

bobby: what you are experiencing is a hydraulic failure. Either the clutch master cylinder, the slave cylinder or both have failed.
If you open the hood, look on the drivers side close the firewall.
There should be a white plastic cylinder with a cap on it.
Remove the cap and see of there is any fluid inside of it.
Note: The cylinder you are looking at has only one cap.
If the cylinder is low or empty, fill it with DOT 3 brake fluid
Look at the cylinder and you should see a line which attaches to the end of it. Follow the line down into the engine compartment.
It should travel over to a flexible hose which will go over to a smaller part on the transmission. Look at the hose and the part on the transmission, checking them for fluid loss. If you see no signs of leaks, get in the car and start pumping the clutch pedal. If the fluid loss was slow, the pedal will come back up, but it will be spongy.
If you look from inside the car, under the dash, follow the clutch pedal up to the place where you see a metal rod connecting to it. Follow the metal rod to the fire wall. Look and see if there are signs of fluid loss from there. You will need to get the air out of the hydraulics if you had just restored the pedal.
If so, the master cylinder will need to be replaced. Usually, I suggest replacing bothe master and slave cylinders because they are the same age and have the same wear and tear.
