Question about 2005 Dodge Neon

1 Answer

When stopping at a stop light or stop sign, my RPM's dip below three-hundred. I have found that when I put the car into neutral the RPM's go back up to normal range (around 850 or so IDLE). Recently while driving on the high way doing 65, the check engine light came on; and I could NOT go faster than 50 mph before my engine lost power. Then 3 key cycles later, the engine light went off and I can drive @ speed limits now. I had the code read, and it was something to do with the cam/crank sensor('s). Are these two problems related? If so, is it a relatively cheap fix?

Something to do with a cam/crank sensor --either one or both are failing or a wiring / harness problem which can leave you stranded the sensors are not expensive if you remember the code you can look it up on line and find the explanation and how to change them

SOURCE: truck dies when i stop or slow down

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

SOURCE: CAM SENSOR ENGINE LIGHT. MAX RPM 2000 SOMTIMES

I seen this before first of all don't let the car dealer to BS the way to your money, most of the time is noting wrong whit the sensor it self but is the plug than goes in to the sensor this what i recommend is to buy another sensor from your local auto part store or salvage yard (cheaper) get three pieces of cable and solder directly in to the sensor brake the plastic around the sensor plug if necessary and secure the three cables to it put some silicon in between the solder and the place the new sensor on top of the old one so you now wish wire goes to which and cut and attach one by one. I now this works 100% i have done it my self many times if you need diagrams or sensor locations you can find that at www.alldatadiy.com now if you still have problems unplug all harness especially all the ones than comes from the back of the engine because that engine tends to leak oil on top of the harness if you have wires doing shortcut replace that section you can solder use heat string tube and change the insulation hose they sale those on part stores to put some zip tides on the ends and you will have your car back and will last Note don't let it get to close to the exhaust use zip tides to keep from touching hot areas.

well you can always reset the cars computer by simply unhooking the battery which will make all the lights go away, but if there is a problem with the car, they will come back on within an hour or two from unhooking the battery. but you may get lucky and they may stay off.

I have a 2002 mercury sable it will stall out unless I put it in neutral and give it gas when stopped at a light or slowing below 1000 rpm. What could be the problem?

Idle air control could be stuck. If so clean it with some carb and choke cleaner. EGR could be stuck partly open. If so clean that or replace it.

My car slams when put into drive. is it the idle

Yes, sounds like the idle speed is too high. If you keep driving like that, you will fry the torque converter / turbine. Since idle is computer controlled, you will have to take it for service tune up. There is one possibility that the rich, high rpm idle used for cold start is not disengaging properly after the engine warms up. Air conditioning will raise the idle speed by a couple hundred rpm, so avoid using it until you have the problem fixed. BTW.....warm engine rpm in idle, and neutral should be around 700-800. Anything over 900-1100 will result in a hard shift into 1st gear and dragging at stop lights.

It sounds as if your neutral safety switch is going bad. Have that checked out and/or just replace it. Part should not be anymore that 15-20 bucks.
