Question about 1988 Dodge Shadow

1 Answer

Hi, I have a 1988 dodge shadow that I love and has been the best car I've ever had. we just now are starting to have to put a little money into changing original parts. Recently the car started idiling rough at stops. We had the timing belt replaced a few years before and figured it was the same thing again because that's how it reacted the first time. We had the belt replaced and parts that run the belt and oodles of other things and a tune up. Since then it has idled extremely rough was surging with power and dying everytime I stopped. The mechanics fixed some of the problems but it still idles rogher to me than normal and the rpm gauge moves like its gaining and losing power. My husband isn't here right now to help me with this and the mechanics admit they are baffeled and the dodge dealer wants to charge 95$ an hour just to trouble shoot it for me. thankyou for your help S mitchell

Possibly a intake manifold gasket leak cuz if it sucks in air then it messes up air/fuel ratio cuz engine tries but cant account for extra air entering system...

Check to make sure that the connector is in tight and also for broken wires .Make sure the ground is tight. If it still blows the fuse there is probably a short in the pump and it has to be replaced.

When there is moisture or it is cold out my dodge shadow has trouble starting and then once I get it running it cuts off while I am driving it.

I have found that starting problems relating to moisture can usually be fixed by a new set of good plug wires. get a set made for the motor, not a set of generic ones. and get a can of the spray moisture displacer stuff and spray it on both ends of the wires before you connect them. do one wire at a time so you do not mix them up.

I have a 1988 dodge shadow 2.2L and it will start and rev to about or above 2000 rpms and when it tries to idle down it just dies. I replaced the iac and it ran fine until I powerwashed the engine bay out...

Sometimes the coolant sensor will cause this condition. It may be in advanced mode so when it's cool it wont idle properly. Also, try spraying the wires with a little silicone spray, the wires may have been affected by the powerwash. Good luck!

How to replace the shifter cable on 1992 dodge shadow 5 speed mannul transimison

?? 5 Speed Manual doesn't have a cable for shifting. They were still using a direct linkage system until 1995. Cables don't work on Manual Transmissions. I owned a 1990 Shadow. Loved it. Never had a cable on the shifter. The speedometer cable was a pain in the **** but not the transmission.

I have a 1988 Dodge Ram 50 with a 2.6 engine and it boggs down and puts out black smoke at the exhaust pipe

mcdevito75 here, The black smoke is gas, have your local shop check out the fuel system, Sensors, Fuel Pressure, fuel injectors all these can cause your problem, look for fuel system deals at various shops to save money, Sears, Pepboys etc.

What transmissions are compatible with a 1988 Dodge shadow for a transmission swap?

Depends on the swap you are looking to do. Nearly all of the transmissions that were standard in shadow will fit perfectly in the mounts (you may have to re-center the engine, tweak here and there).

The Shadow Transmissions were:
Manual:
A520, A555, A523, A568?(on a lot of 2.2 2.5 turbo cars)

Auto:
A413

Some folks over @ turbododge have had success with some of the more modern mopar transmissions (out of Neons, and the Stratus) it depends on how much fabrication work you are willing to do for mounting.

I'd recommend the A568. It's a tough son of a gun that you can find relatively easily and the mounts should line up alright. Please do a mockup depending on what kind of engine you're putting in. You can find a lot of folks on turbododge and cardomain who have managed to put a 2.4DOHC in their shadows (of varying years) and they tend to use the A568.

PLEASE use new mounts, even a stock 2.2 tbi can quite a bit of kick to it if it's not properly restrained.

Hope that helps!

88 dodge shadow idles very ruff. pedal to floor to start.

i have an 88 dodge shadow turbo with a five speed. the car will fall on its face at 5500rpm coming out of first gear. and its rpm range gets lover with each gear. the fuel pressure rises when it fall on its face. the car never dies just falls then picks back up and will fall again unless you keep it under the that rpm. then it is fine. what could be the problem?
