1991 Miata: battery new (measures 12.6) and alternator good. Battery is being killed by something - this happened twice to 2 new batteries. Please advise. Thanks!

I have a 1991 mazda miata and am on my third alternator. I probably haven't put 100 miles on the car since replacing the alternator for the third time, but the car has been sitting in my garage for 7 months. I tried to start it but the battery appeared to be dead. We jump started the car, let it idle for 20-30 minutes, then drove it for about 10 minutes before turing the engine off. When we tried to restart it, nothing. It was like the car didn't have a battery in it. We jump started it again and drove it home. I'll have the battery tested, but I'm curious if there is something about this car that is causing the alternators to fail, or if that is just the quick fix the car dealership is telling me to keep selling me alternators??

2002 Mazda tribute won't start but can jump, car will shut off while driving

you mentioned new alternator and battery, but it seem that the alternator is not charging, when you install the new battery the car started and run and after hours of running specially if head light is on the car shuts down. this is an indication that the alternator is not charging. (factory defect) have it checked or return part to auto supply.
if alternator is good and you have the car jumped and run it will not shut down even if your battery is dead because the charge of the alternator is enough to power the electrical system of the car until you turn it off. this applies to all cars

1997 mazda miata...drove one day everything fine. got in car next morning everything totally dead. no lights were left on

Modern sealed type batteries fail in just this manner, I have seen cars that the owner got gas and went to start and doing, it was the battery. Have the battery tested by any parts store that offers the free service, AutoZone is one but there are many that do the testing free of charge. Also clean the battery cable and the try before installing a new battery with a wire brush and baking soda in warm water solution.

My egr valve burnt and has been replaced but my mazda tribute still wont start

Your alternator is not charging the battery. Remove it and have it tested at your local parts store. Fully charge the battery with a charger. If the alternator tests good, reinstall it and start the car. Check the voltage at the battery and also at the alternator on the big charge wire terminal. Report the voltages here for additional troubleshooting steps.

That would probably be your alternator. The car doesnt take as much power to keep running as the lights. The lights use alot of power and if the battery is doing the alternators job it drains quickly. The battery is only designed to start the car then the alternator should take over and recharge the battery. When the alternator fails the battery will soon fail. Even though you had to jump the battery it was still new so it had a big charge. That is why you were able to drive so far. On an old battery and a jump I've seen people drive a long ways until they turn on their lights. I say 99.99% sure it's your alternator. Here is how you can test it. Get your car jump started again or charge your battery and start your car. While it is running get out and unhook the positive battery cable from the battery. If your car dies, you have found your problem(the alternator). I hope that I could be of some help. Good luck.

Car won't start. The battery and alternator are

If you can jump and start the car then the starter is good.

I had a similar situation where the battery tester showed 13V and green/good LED but I could not start my car. After many tests, I found out that the battery had good Voltage (13V) but not enough Amperage to crank the starter.
I replaced the battery and the car started like a champ!.

- clue to see if you need to replace the battery is if you have used it for
about 3 years or more.
- Dead battery happens a lot more often than bad alternator.

The alternator is loading up too much for some reason.
Had the same issue on my friend's 2001 Mazda Protege. Turned out the voltage regulator in the alternator was faulty. Had the alternator rebuilt. A week later, it acted up again! There is apparently another issue, but I have not been able to figure it out.
Unfortunately, I don't have a clear answer for you, but, one's thing's for sure. Mazda has to stop using crappy Ford electrics in their cars.

Mazda Miata 2001 car problem

Batteries can have a dead cell in them, meaning there is sufficient charge to run accessories and the "check glass" may look fine (dark green in color on maintenance free batteries), but one dead cell in the battery indicates replacement time.
