Question about 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

Open Question

My 2001 olds alero starts right up, idles smooth, and revs beautifully, but when I begin to drive it loses all power. I have changed the plugs and what I would hve thought was a rotor, but it was like nothing I had seen before. I changed the air and fuel filters. The MAP vacuum hose was completely eroded and had most certainly leaked for years. I changed the oxygen sensors on the adice of the ORiely auot parts attendant. But it still does the same thing. It ran alright up until a few days ago. I thought the transmission was going out as I had to let off the gas to get it to shift up. Over the next few days it deteriated into the state I just described.

I'm sure you have installed a fuel pressure gauge and monitored the fuel pressure while the problem is occurring?Another diagnostic tool which is easy to do,is while the problem is occurring, unplug one sensor at a time beginning with the Mass Air Flow first,.if it uses one. Many times, not always, depending on the sensor,if the sensor is taken out of the picture as far as what the PCM is seeing, like unplugging the MAF,the PCM will substitute the missing sensor output with a generic value that will allow the engine to at least run,and if unplugging for example the MAF,the engine idle speed returns to normal, you know you're onto the problem. You didn't mention if the engine ran ok other than the idle problem. As far as checking for vacuum leaks,i use something like brake cleaner or WD 40,more of a liquid, and it does sound like a vacuum leak.Plastic intake manifolds do develop nearly invisible cracks that open up more with heat.Revsisit the possibility. And as for the PCM,it is possible, but more likely a mechanical problem.Lastly, remove an O2 sensor or two before the catalytic convertor, run the engine and see if anything changes.Cheap way to verify the catalytic convertor is flowing and not restricting engine airflow,as i have seen bad cats cause misfire codes and strange problems.Good luck.

SOURCE: olds alero 2.4 idle fuel pressure

most likely idle air control sensor or low engine coolant I know sounds funny but IAC uses coolant to regulate idle. Idle air control valve or throttle body positioning sensor.

First try taking both of your battery cables off the battery and then touch the metal part of the cables together for one full minute...this will clear the error codes and return your computer to it's default settings. If all problems persist after doing this, I would suspect that the computer is bad. Let me know how you make out.

SOURCE: 94 Bravada that stumbles and stalls.. won't start when warm..

Try checking the exhaust flow when someone else is pushing down on the gas petal. The farther the petal gos down, the more exhaust should be coming out. I replaced my catalitic convertor at 44000 miles, it was clogged. I had them install a high flow type.

suspect low fuel pressure to the injectors
run the fault codes to determine where the fault may be before you spend money

I have a 1997 lumina with 3.1L. the problem started with loss of power under load and p0300 code. check coils and vacuum leaks both OK.change spark plugs and wires.[same problem] check compression OK.

Since you changed the sensor we will assume it is working. When you disconnect it you put the computer in limp mode which stops it from using sensor values. If code 300 is the only code we will assume the coolant temp sensor and others are ok.
I would check fuel pressure with a gauge next.

Oldsmobile alero starting issues

I doubt it is ignition related.
Could be a problem with the idle air control valve or a dirty throttle body.
Could also be a vac leak, or fuel pressure issues.

2001 Olds Alero will act **** when switching gears

My car does the same thing. I wondered that myself, I don't think that's what it is though, I don't think you have an issue with the transmission. Your car has TWO check engine lights, and with the Alero--if there is an issue with the transmission one of the lights will come on. I am not 100% positive of this, but I had a 1999 Bravada (Olds) and it did do that when I had a tranny issue.

I notice when I drive my 2001 Alero my right leg gets SORE from pushing the pedal so hard. I think it is age, not the transmission.

READ YOUR SERVICE MANUALS. I don't get why people ignore them, honestly they have a wealth of information in them...could have saved a lot of people lots of money when people started claiming their car wouldn't start when it was a security feature that is listed in the manual that came with the book.
