I believe they had a distributor in some and some were DIS system. If yours has a distributor, the CMP is in there and the distributor has to be replaced as a whole unit.

If you have a DIS system, Here is a pic that might help.

Where is the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors located on a 1996 chevy cavelier and are there any diagrams available for replacing them

The crankshaft sensor is located just to the side of your ignition coil pack on the engine block. The camshaft sensor is located on the back of the engine, just to the left of the oil filter. I would HIGHLY suggest having a qualified technician do this job for you. There is only one 10mm head bolt holding the sensor into the block, but these sensors are know to freeze into the engine block and break leaving a part of the sensor in the engine. If you attempt this yourself, be sure to rotate the sensor once the bolt is removed, and pull GENTLY. If it breaks, your in for a large repair bill.

1996 chevy tahoe 4wd LT 4Door 5.7L Vortec. Truck will not start, the starter grinds VERY loudly. Replaced starter several times, battery is good, replaced crank position sensor. Possible pre ignition? ...

i suggest removing the flywheel inspection cover, and rolling the engine over a little bit at a time, checking to make sure that there are no worn or broken teeth. also, make sure there is no lateral movement, which could indicate a broken flexplate. good luck.
