If the power steering goes stiff soft stiff soft whe turning would this be steering rack and pinion needs to be replace or bad cv joint

Change the steering oil pump.. this will help you for gd :)

The steering wheel makes a clicking sound but not that loud when driving straight or when making a turn. Is that mean the rack and pinion of my car are bad?


Take it back to the dealer. The problem could be a Constant Velocity Joint wearing out.
Replacing the rack and pinion is an exceedingly expensive repair. Replacing a CV joint or axle is significantly less expensive.
It sounds as if your dealer is honest.

Steering will not move


Check your power steering pump and pump gear and all mechanical linkage to be safe. Most of the time it is the rack and pinion going bad, but can be a bad cv joint so check completely.

Have a 4.7 V-8 4 door 2 wd. Have replaced power steering pump twice and rack & pinion twice. Is still hard to steer and soft and then hard, etc. Have sprayed the steering coupler(knuckle) and all...


Remove the outer tie rods from the knuckles. Turn the knuckles by hand. If they turn hard than you have issues with ball joints binding.

If they move freely than start the vehicle and turn the wheel. If you steering is still stiff I would be suspicious of the universal joint near the rack. If you remove it it should rotate and flex freely. If it doesn't replace it.

Steering is very stiff. I have bled the lines and replaced the fluid. Started doing it just now and then and now it does it all the time would it be my pump?


why did you replace the fluid? it could be the pump, but pressure needs to be checked. when you turn steering wheel all the way to the stop, it should whine somewhat. Make sure the belt is tight.

Something knocking in a steering system on my 98 civic


Suspect worn outer cv joint. Check the boot for any tears, damage or leaking grease. If these are present your cv joint will fail soon if it hasn't already. If you put the car into reverse and turn the wheels to a hard lock a bad cv joint will make a popping grinding type sound. Try left and right turns when doing this test.

This is most likely the steering knuckle or tie rod end that needs grease or most likley replacement. If your hear clunk when turning, then it is proabably the tie rod ends. If clunks while driving, then it may be the balljoints.

Changed rack and pinion twice, struts, steering colummn, power steering pump 2x, steering still stiff??? i am lost!!!!!! toyota celica 1992


just a thought. when you changed the struts, did you replace the strut plate and bearings???? also how is the lower ball joints and the drive axles? any binding in the cv shaft ?. also is there any slippage in the belt cause by a faulty tensioner? just some things to look at. some have a cooler inline with the power steering, make sure it is not plugged, kinked or damaged in any way tht it will restrict flow

Sounds like a bad steering rack & pinion assembly... is it only bad in one direction or both...?
If both then it's the rack assembly... Hope this helps...;-)

2007 ford focus clicking noise in steering column


This clicking noise that you said does it do it when you turn? If so your problem lies in your CVJoints. Constant velocity joints are attached to the steering mechanism. Try an experiment first. Get the vehicle at about 15 mph and do a small donut (controlled) parking lot would be easier for this and safer. Then turn the opposite direction. If the clicking noise is on both directions then you might as well replace both inner and outer CV joints for the right and left side. It might be your rack and pinion as well. The joints fail first before your rack and pinion so check that first. You may want to see the fluid level on the rack and pinion to see if that was the problem. Check the cheapest thing first.
