Question about Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

My Check Engine Light just came on in my 2000 Toyota Corolla, what mite be the problem? I have been having to put about a quart of oil in it a week, but see no leaks anywhere, & the oil level is where its supposed to be on the dipstick. It also acts like it wants to cut off after coming off of the interstate from doing 60mph to anything below that. I just got the car not even 2 months ago & actually still paying on it. I don't have alot of money to fix it or to pay a mechanic to try & find it. Is there anything I can do to narrow down to the problem before I take it to someone that charges by the hour so their gonna delay looking at it as long as possible. Plus I don't really trust mechanics around here because the last time I took a vehicle to one they kept it for a week & were out driving around in it getting speeding tickets & then when it was returned they said nothing was wrong with it, but when I gave it to them to check out it wouldn't even stay running. PLEASE HELP, I'm DESPERATE!!!!

You need to get the codes associated with check engine light this will tell you the cause of that problem, if your burnining the oil up this would be the reason you dont see leaks , they are internal. The burning of oil can make the oxygen sensors send signals to the ecu or ecm changing the fuel mix which can cause the vehicle to run improperally. Since you've only had it for 2 mnths if it was bought from a dealer they should fix it, if private buy then it will be up to you. Hope this helps !

How many quarts of oil does a Corolla Dx hold at oil change?

4 quarts, 5 with filter change according to the book. Rule of thumb, buy 5 and once you drain and replace the filter, start by putting 3 and a half quarts in and check the level. If it's between the marks start the motor and run for 5 minutes then let it sit for 5 minutes and recheck the level. Top off half a quart at a time till you get the oil level between the full and add marks.

My 2000 toyota corolla has been losing at least 2 quarts of oil betweem my 3000 mile oil change most times I am down 1-2qrts between oil changes & I have to put oil in .I have had the entire oil pan...

You need to determine where the oil is being lost. Open the hood and look for traces of oil. Place a clean piece of cardboard under the car and idle the engine - at the rate you are losing oil, you should see where the oil is dripping onto the cardboard within a few minutes, then work upward from there. Possibilities: Crankshaft seal (passenger side of engine), valve cover gasket (top of engine), main seal (driver side of engine). Any of these can go bad, far many reasons.
