Fixing my transmission. ... 98 GMC Jimmy tranny problems. mrockerrock ... Never had to replace that and my 98 jimmy has 118000 miles on it.
Is the check engine light on? See what it says. It may be transmission related. The leaking fluid is probably transmission fluid. If it's really low you'll have a problem.
It winds up in 1st and then shifts right from 1st into 3rd. Then never shifts into 4th. Plus rev is gone. You broke the sun shell. The transmission will need to rebuilt or replaced.
At 22500 Normal stuff like regular oil chages etc..
At 30,000-ish exchange all fluids.. Radiator, break, power stearing, trani (if auto)
On the trani - I strongly feel that a FULL fluid exchange should be done.. They normally only do a "pan drop" only exchanging about half the fluid or less.. Makes no sense to me.. Pay a little more and exchange ALL the trani fluid..
I have my 10 year old trani fluid fullly exchaned every 40-k to 50-k and now have 160-k on it with no leaks and works like the day it was new..
Most people dont understand that old/dirty fluids is what causes leaks and break down..
Also - have you breaks inspected..

Had the same problem on my 2001 GMC Jimmy, but my reverse was also out!!!! Was the transmission!!! But it also did the same thing when starting from a dead stop! Had to rev up the RPMs to get it to shift, but once it got into the higher gears, it drove fine!!!! My mother also had a 2001 GM S-10 with the same problem and it was her tranny as well!!! Hope this is not your problem because it is not cheap........a friendly mechanic charged $1300 to replace the tranny with a used one with lower miles!! He also said that these models of GMs were notorious because the spline gear used in these models were made of a lower grade of metal and were prone to wear out prematurely!!!!! I also first suspected the shift sensor before I talked to a professional!!!!!
