Had the same problem with my 2005 Chevy Impala, the dealer put a kit on the steering column. It is a bushing of some type which took up the slack.

What is a CV joint?

A wobble in the steering is more likely to be one of

- loose wheel nuts
- loose hub nut
- worn steering tie rod outer joint
- worn steering tie rod inner joint
- loose steering rod universal
- worn steering knuckle ball joint

Out of these a worn or loose steering tie rod joint is most likely. If you can, jack the front of the car up and rest it on axle stands, NOT just on the jack, then have one person shake the front wheel back and forth while holding it at 9 and 3 o'clock, while another holds the steering wheel still. Then look at and feel each joint to see if you can locate the looseness.

Loss of power steering

If fluid level is up and pump drive belt is not slipping it could be an early indication of either a pump issue or seals/valving issue in steering sector/steering rack.

If fluid looks like it has a metallic look to it like some paint finishes do- replacement of both units is in order.

If fluid looks clean, just dark and oxidized, look for loose or leaking hoses. Also check for possible mechanical interference with steering, loose colmn to dashboard, loose or binding flex coupling, or loose power steering rack, inner and outer tie rod bind, even ball joints or king pins that might be close to siezing.

I have a 1981 Corvette with tilt steering wheel. The steering wheel has started flopping like something is loose in the steering column. Whats going on? Thanks Jim

You must remove the steering cowl below the steering wheel and see what is loose, broken or worn. It more likely to be a loose bolt, in which case just tighten it and refit the cowl.
Hope that helps

check the steering linkage of the front end for loose components, most can be checked with the vehicle on the ground.
Also , check the Intermediate Steering Shaft for play, this runs between the steering gear box & the lower part of the steering column. it has an expandable section with 2 overlapping shafts that can wear & become loose with age & driving
