Question about Oldsmobile Achieva

1 Answer

Hello, I have a 96 Olds Achieva 3100 V6, just started having trouble the other day. It will start fine but misfires till you are able to floor the gas a couple times. If you try to move the car it has no power ( pedal all the way to the floor and only doing like 5mph), it makes a sound as if it is backfiring but the sound is from under the motor, but after about a minute of able to open the throttle up it runs fine the rest of time intill you shut the car off. I was thinking it might be the crank sensor (I have one here that I was gonna swap it out with) but having trouble finding out where the wires plug in at. Do they plug into the plate under the coil pack?

It cant be the catalytic converter as I no longer have one, and the muffler is brand new.

IF CAR ONLY GOES 5 TO 10 MILES AN HOUR.SOUND LIKE YOU HAVE RESTRICTED EXHAUST SYSTEM.MUFFLER EITHER PLUGGED OR CATALYTIC CONVERTER PLUGGED.HAVE YOUR ENGINE VACUUM TESTED USING VACUUM GAUGE.GOOD ENGINE VACUUM 18 HGS TO 25 HGS. IF ENGINE VACUUM SLOWLY DROPS TO ZERO YOU HAVE RESTRICTED EXHAUST SYSTEM.TAKE CAR TO MUFFLER SHOP OR GARAGE HAVE THEM CHECK IT OUT.

YOUR CAR HAS THE INTEGRATED DIRECT IGNITION. YOU DONT HAVE PLUGS WIRES .YOU HAVE IGNITION COIL AND MODULE ASSEMBLY COVER SITTING ON TOP OF CYLINDER HEAD. YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE 4 BOLTS TO REMOVE THE COVER WITH IGNITION COILS MODULE AND PLUG BOOTS.YOUR SPARK PLUGS WILL HAVE PLUG BOOTS INSTEAD OF WIRES .

I have the 3100 V6 not the Quad 4 and I do have plug wires as they run over the top of my motor from the front to the back to plug on to my coil packs. I was looking for where the crank sensor plugged into.

YELLOW AND PURPLE WIRE WILL BE GOING FROM IGNITION MODULE TO THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR.

Yes pretty much all the parts on a 96 and 97 olds Achieva will interchange with out any problem, and the o2 sensor is no exception. Hopefully this answers your question, and if you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Where is the thermostat located on 1997 Olds achieva?

If you have the 3100 v6 engine, the thermostat is located behind an aluminum housing behind the exhaust crossover tube almost directly below the throttle body. If you have the 2.4 dohc engine, it is under a steel housing on top of the waterpump which is underneath the exhaust manifold on the back side of the engine.

96 Olds Aschieva 3100 V6...car idles fine when cold in "P" and "N", but wants to stall in "R" and "D", and most of the time it does stall..if i let it stall 3 times...

have you had the fuel system cleaned as it could be dirt.also have you cleaned the throttle valve(plate)as when these get dirty it can cause this type of condition.it could also be a fuel supply problem like fuel filter, fuel pump, injectors.the ignition circuit could have a problem also like the coils, the ignition module, you don`t say if you replaced the plugs when changing the wires.it could also be the crank sensor or cam sensor possibility.this should be checked out at a shop if you can as some of these things need experience and equipment to diagnose.

Intermittant p0302,p0305 codes misfires

A code P0305 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
· Faulty spark plug or wire
· Faulty coil (pack)
· Faulty oxygen sensor (s)
· Faulty fuel injector
· Burned exhaust valve
· Faulty catalytic converter(s)
· Running out of fuel
· Poor compression
· Defective computer

If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires , distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad, especially given you had water issues. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced.
I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

After coming out of walmart i started my 96 olds achieva started just fine as i was talking to my girlfriend and putting my seatbelt on it quit. now i wont start and stay running. its starts and dies....

I assume there is gas in it. First thing i would check, or change is the MAF. Mass air flow sensor. If they are faulty, that's typically what an engine will do. Start, and stop. An auto wrecker is probably your best bet. Cheapest anyway.
