Question about 1994 Ford Taurus

2 Answers

Car won't start. Bought privately 2 days ago, started fine, now will not start. Starter replaced in Feb '08, but less than 500 miles put on car since then. Checked battery and it is fully charged. No sound at all when ignition is turned to start the car- suggesting probably not the starter- correct? What are the possible problems? Thanks, Jeff

Check for constant battery power on the main lug of the starter constantly. and check the small wire for battery power while trying to start if you are missing the small wire power could be your starter relay or ignition switch, you can also try jumping the two posts on the starter with the key on if it starts you are missing the starter signal decribed above (small wire) please rate -jeff

08 Chevy Cobalt wont start. Battery is good.?

Generally speaking, if the starter was dead it would not jump start.
Sounds like the key switch or the neutral safety switch.
You would need to know if the starter has power when the key is in the start position.

Soundls like it could be the start relay thats in with the fuses
Not sure where they are on that car...( the rabbit they were under the dash on the drivers side) but locate them and find the one for the starter cricuit then find another in the system that is the same swap those 2 and see what it does next time its cold

2000 Toyota Avalon XLS intermittent starting problem

If the car does not crank at all then the anomaly could lie with the starter motor. These suckers have carbon brushes that over time will wear. Usually there are springs that keep pushing the brush onto the commutator but it is possible that the brushes are so worn that the springs have reached the max on their spring and the brushes make intermittent contact at times. That explains why it is dead sometimes and starts after you jostle the unit.

Or if you have an auto transmission you can also check out the switch that is part of your transmission that prevents car from starting unless it is in neutral. The neutral safety switch. If the latter is bogus you can either replace it or just bypass it and save the dinero.

Check the spark plug. My truck did the same thing and it was because the spark plug had completely been removed.

Volkswagen Jetta won't start.

Sounds like you have a weak battery, or possibly a bad alternator. The fact that you were able to drive it for 2 days before it died again leads me to believe that it is most likely the battery. You can test the battery by looking at voltage across the terminals when you try to start the car, if it\'s less than 12 volts your battery needs to be replaced. If your battery is more than 5 years old it should be replaced anyway. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Car won't turn over randomly

When it will not crank, a mechanic would check for voltage at the starter, the clutch safety switch, and the key switch.
