Sounds like the nutral saftey switch is faulty, it's easy to access = it's on the rear driver's side of the transmission and screws in.

Wont start

Try disconnecting the battery cable for two minutes and check if you still get the problem.
The problem is probably with the automatic gear shift control module, which is a computer. If you do not clear the problem you will need to go to a garage. the mechanics will connect a scanner to car computer, get an error message in return, diagnose and repair the problem.

Automatic 1996 Pontiac Bonneville wont shift gears

Transmissions have so many parts so it's difficult to diagnose. I would have the transmission filter changed first. Usually that is the most common shifting problem. If that doesn't fix the problem it may be a little more costly.

1995 cherokee 4wd trouble starting must move gear shifter several times before it will start

try starting it in nuetral. if it starts everytime then the shifting switch is going out. If nothing changes then maybe the ignition switch is going bad and just by chance it starts by wiggling the shifter.
If this is a manual trans maybe the nuetral safety switch on the clutch pedal is going out.

It won't start.

sometimes the bolts on the gear shift (inside column) come loose and the vehicle does not know it is in park, so won't crank. My parents had this problem with their 1994 Villager. Wiggling the gear shift allowed it to start... of course the real solution was to tighten up the bolts.

1996ford econ Shifting gear problem

Almost definately, follow the shift linkages down the column and under the bonnet get a buddy to move them while you are looking the worn parts will be very obvious. quite involved to repair if it all needs to be overhauled, may be best to be left to an experianced tech, unless you have relevent experience. it wont start somtimes because the inhibitor switch is on the linkage.
