2000 Avalon Toyota ran out of gas and I can't get my key to turn

Make sure it's in park. If the key still won't remove try turning the steering wheel to get the key to turn. Running out of gas cannot cause a key issue. Two unrelated vehicle systems.

Does pontiac grand am have a relay,or switch or button to turn electrick feul pump back on after car runs out of gas?

Your make and model car has no such fuel pump cut-off device like a switch, and in any event it is only activated due top a crash exceeding 3 times the force of gravity, . GM uses a oil pressure switch to shut down the pump but only in the case of an accident. The small electric fuel pump that is used in this car depends on the gasoline in your tank to cool it and lubricate it, when you run out of gas it damages the fuel pump due to heat and it will not restart. I get this problem posted allot. It is very important in modern cars with in fuel tank electric pumps that you not let the fuel level go below 1/8 tank on the gauge. You will need to have the fuel pump replaced and to do that requires the gas tank be removed from the car.

Car had been running fine, backfired once and lost a little power momentarily. Parked 24 hours, started right up but backfired and died. Now starts easily but dies without intense pressure on gas pedal.

Sounds like it's fouled a spark plug this happens as the plug wires fail and the power goes to ground instead of firing the fuel. The timing belt could have skipped time but the engine may run smooly but have very little power.65158335.jpgThe plug wires will act like what you say too.340881376.jpgThe boots get electrcal holes in them and they fire to the head instead of the fuel mixture and then it fires sometimes and throws everything of and they run very badly or not at all.

Most likely is the fuel pressure regulator on the top of the engine is ruptured sending raw fuel into the intake and seeping by the rings,or a stuck injector

After running out of fuel, what is the proper procedure for restarting the fuel injected vehicle?

put fuel in tank. turn key to run position( not start) wait 5 seconds. You should hear the fuel pump running. Repeat. Then start car. If you do not hear the fuel pump hum then it may have siezed due to lack of lubrication from no fuel. Sometimes you can get the fuel pump to kick on if you bang on the gas tank with the palm of your hand_ while turning the key to start position.

My car wants to turn over and almost starts to run and then dies.

Check the fuel ,if the fuel is not empty then get the fuel pressure checked. If the fuel pressure is low then its faulty fuel pump or clogged fuel filter. When fuel pressure is low,the engine does not get require fuel at its required time period so the car turns over but due to low fuel pressure it stops. But if the fuel pressure is checked ok then other possibility is low voltage in battery.Get the battery checked. It is a 12 volt battery. If battery checked out ok then get the battery to starter connection checked. If the starter to battery connection is weak then car will just crank but will not get properly started due to faulty starter. ------- Thanks.helpmech.

When first started black smoke comes out exhaust pipe,, what could this be

Black smoke is burning oil. Blue smoke is usually transmission fluid due to a leaking modulator valve in the older auto transmission. White smoke is due to water getting in to a cylinder from a bad gasket, cracked block or a cracked head. Black smoke from engines on starting and/or running tends to mean there is fuel leaking into the engine, or the fuel mix is incorrect and not atomised correctly. the main causes are normally a nakered air filter that isnt letting enough clean air into the engine to mix. a blocked fuel filter, which is either not letting enough fuel in, or in some cases, a faulty fuel filter which is letting too much fuel into the engine, and causing black smoke due to excess burning. Black smoke is a fuel/air mixture suggestion problems with injection or carbonation. Cause of black smoke is due to running rich in the fuel air mix. Check the oil,the oil leak, the air filter, the fuel pump and fuel filter to confirm the fault.

Driving down the road the engine will suddenly shut off.

Check the fuel pump and fuel filter.if the fuel is getting blocked due to dirt in fuel or clogged filter then the car will stop in between while driving because the flow of fuel will stop due to this dirt in the fuel. This has to be checked. There are many other possibilities that has to be checked in this case. 1)Sometimes the car will just plain stop running if there is a faulty/weak coil wire. 2)If your car has safety alarm system in it then this can be the other reason .in this case either the alarm needs to be disabled or the alarm needs to be replaced. 3)In some cases its the problem of ECU .it gets short or faulty due to electrical short circuit in the car. Also other common possibilities that has to be checked are. 1)The voltage of the battery .It should be exact 12 volt. 2)The condition on the alternator .if the alternator is weak or faulty it will not let the battery charged.when the car is running at that time the alternator keeps on charging the battery.if the alternator is faulty it will not charge the this has to be checked. 3) The other thing to be checked is the spark plug. and the coil pack.if the coil pack is weak or faulty it will not let the spark to come when you start the car. Also the other best option is to get the car scanned at car diagnosis diagnosis center you will receive the error codes of which part is faulty or weak in car , due to which the problem is occurring. At its free to get car scanned.they also deals in selling parts .so you can get the faulty parts replaced by their technicians. Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Not getting fuel

If the car sat for a year then the fuel pump might be stuck. Have someone try to start it while you smack on the bottom of the gas tank until you hear the pump run.
